Yiikes - sorry guys. Good luck on the rest of your apps.
I was stupid enough to miss the Stern deadline yesterday, and now I have all my MBA eggs in the CBS basket.

I hear you. I applied to Stern yesterday and got done with my R1 apps. Just when I was ready to take a break, I get the ding from CBS. Now I am looking at R2 deadlines and thinking about applying to more schools.

Been lurking on this forum for a while. Good luck to all of you who are playing the waiting game! Quick question for some of you more experienced applicants - my recommender told me today that he's concerned about the appropriate length of the rec letter. Does anyone know if Columbia gives any guidance on this, meaning should the answers be ~1 paragraph per question, vs 1 page per question (and therefore more detailed)? Hoping to submit for RD in the next few days...

Thanks!

there is something like 9 or 10 questions (they are available on the CBS admissions page and I think you can download the form once you start your app online). Each question has a 2000 character limit. The honest answer is, it's up to your reviewer how in-depth they want to go. Some questions, I would imagine it to be hard to write a "strong" recommendation with only one paragraph, while for others, a few sentences could work (hopefully they aren't writing 2000 characters about your weakness! unless, of course, they are REALLY good at turning that into a strength).

I have not seen any of my letters and waived the right to see mine - so I have no idea how much/little they wrote per question. I do know, however, that one recommender complained that, even when using less than the 2000 character limit, some sentences were cut off on the PDF report that is generated from the questions asked. So I would just make sure to tell your reviewer to make sure he/she reads the final PDF to make sure all of their words make it onto the actual report that is generated and delivered to adcomm.

good luck!

Does anyone have the same problem I encountered regarding to set up an interview? Unfortunately that all my interviewers either don’t have time for interview or don’t reply to my email. As two weeks deadline approaching soon, shall I contact admission office to request an on campus interview?

Many thanks!

email [email protected] and ask them for their advice and explain your situation. They are pretty quick to respond and will offer the best advice.

And don't worry about the 2 weeks - that is more to keep the process moving. You won't get penalized if you can't schedule it within that time frame - especially with the problem you've been having.

I had the same question but when I attended an information session with Mary Miller (one of the top decision makers in the adcom and a person who reads apps) she told me that it was up to the person giving the recommendation BUT she didn't see any reason that a recommendation should be longer than 2 pages. As she put it, the adcom wants to know about an applicants strongest attributes or those that the applicant needs to work on. Therefore, the person writing your rec should be able to hone in on a few attributes rather than write a bio on who you are.

Put it this way, if you are reading 50 apps per week and 95% of the apps have recommendation letters of 2 pages or less, then it is not going to reflect well if you drop one in that is 2.5 pages.

I wanted to stand out in content but not in length.

That's my humble two cents.

Are you only emailing the 3 people that popped up on your initial log in to the system?

The system will allow you to cycle through a total of 9 interviewers. I had the same problem but re-read the instructions on the pages when you first sign-in to the CBS interview pages. I re-inputed my area and slightly expanded my radius and was able to get new people. After failing to hear from the first 3 people, I re-emailed my first 3 prospective interviewer and emailed my next 3 all at once (separate emails of course). I heard back from 2 people the next day and selected the one that I wanted to interview with. I also emailed the alum that I did not select and told her that I appreciated her response but a prior interviewer had just contacted me and scheduled a time. She told me to call her if I had any questions and to email her about my impression from the interview - which I did.

If you have gone through all 9 of your interviewers then I am really sorry that you are having that difficulty. Hopefully CBS will be able to help. I would be concerned that they would make you interview with a student via Skype. Maybe that would be better for some applicants but I would be anxious doing a phone interview.
