Been lurking on this forum for a while. Good luck to all of you who are playing the waiting game! Quick question for some of you more experienced applicants - my recommender told me today that he's concerned about the appropriate length of the rec letter. Does anyone know if Columbia gives any guidance on this, meaning should the answers be ~1 paragraph per question, vs 1 page per question (and therefore more detailed)? Hoping to submit for RD in the next few days...
Thanks!
there is something like 9 or 10 questions (they are available on the CBS admissions page and I think you can download the form once you start your app online). Each question has a 2000 character limit. The honest answer is, it's up to your reviewer how in-depth they want to go. Some questions, I would imagine it to be hard to write a "strong" recommendation with only one paragraph, while for others, a few sentences could work (hopefully they aren't writing 2000 characters about your weakness! unless, of course, they are REALLY good at turning that into a strength).
I have not seen any of my letters and waived the right to see mine - so I have no idea how much/little they wrote per question. I do know, however, that one recommender complained that, even when using less than the 2000 character limit, some sentences were cut off on the PDF report that is generated from the questions asked. So I would just make sure to tell your reviewer to make sure he/she reads the final PDF to make sure all of their words make it onto the actual report that is generated and delivered to adcomm.
good luck!
