I know there are people on this forum who are way more savvy regarding the Consortium app strategy, so I will only try to answer a portion of question 2. Kelley mentioned that the schools do not get to read your Consortium mission recommendation or mission essay. Only the Consortium reads that to help them determine your membership eligibility.

I thought so too. However, during one of my visits to a Consortium school (that shall remain nameless), I was told by an adcom member that they DO get to read the membership essay...but only after they've decided to admit. I was also told that this particular school used the membership material to aid in making their decisions on consortium fellowships.

Thanks for that correction. That's interesting. Do they get to see the recommendations? Because I remember hearing that they don't. But it makes me wonder if they said that they don't see the essays as well. Or maybe some schools use it and other don't. Huummmm....

Just got dinged from Haas. Quite a relief actually...

It's my first admissions decision and I definitely saw it coming, I applied only as a shot in the dark, my stats are well below their average and I understand they use gpa/GMAT probably more than any other school.

I've heard Haas hasn't actually had many American Indian, African American, or Hispanic American CGSM fellow since they rejoined CGSM and their CGSM fellows are typically representative of their school in general... Anyone know if their is any truth to that? Not saying that's why I didn't get in but I would be curious to know why they don't use CGSM for what it is- a source of great URM candidates.

I just got dinged also. Pretty bummed about it.. I thought I made a real effort to show how serious I was about the school (x-country trips, attending multiple events, support letters, etc), but I guess my low GPA was too much to overcome for even an interview. Oh well. It happens.

Haas's difficulty attracting URM candidates was apparent during their Diversity Workshop this past fall.. the event was for FT and two different EMBA programs (hitting two different professional demographics) and they still struggled to fill a room of prospective students. They also had significantly fewer students/alums organizing and running the event than what I saw at similar events for other schools, further underlining your assertion. Weird. It's a top school in a great area, you'd think that people of all demos would be knocking their doors down.

Anyway, I was just looking through my Haas online account and noticed that a lot of fields were filled out incorrectly (GPA, GMAT) or just left blank altogether (my essays...). I remember someone mentioning on this thread that Haas enters all Consortium applicant info manually into their systems.. I just hope that all my information was read and reviewed in the same format that I entered it in the Consortium app.

Did anyone else notice the same thing?

I noticed the same thing, and I had the same thoughts about the missing/incomplete sections on the app. But I also noticed that on other apps that went through CGSM (unc and Emory to be specific). If I do get into CGSM I will provide that feedback because it is a little unnerving & I want to say I'm confident all the data was transferred seamlessly but I'm only about 87% confident.

Dinged at Haas also..... pretty pissed, but what can you do. I was a re-applicant and thought I had almost everything where it needed to be this go-round. I too went to Haas' Diversity event and it was pretty lackluster. Texas' was awesome (2010) and I hear Michigan's was off-the-chain by several people, along with many other schools. Everyone deserves the opportunity to utilize wonderful programs that they earned there way in, but as Qwill just mentioned, Haas' cgsm members didn't seem very underrepresented.... may not be the case this year. Guess those of use who got dinged are simply meant to go elsewhere and Congrats to those of you who got in or even at least waitlisted. Haas is statistically the 3rd or 4th hardest program to get into.

Haas Ding Dong!!! It was not a surprise. Now Johnson comes up to be the first in my ranking since I ranked Haas No.1 and Johnson No.2. :)

I don't know if that's true, but I will say this, Haas, was by far the least inviting, least enthusiastic, and least accommodating school of the 4 schools I applied to through The Consortium. The other 3 were NYU, Texas, and Wisconsin. For example, Haas was the only school who wouldn't accept my second GMAT score which I took in early February. They said that any test taken after the deadline set for round 2 would give me an unfair advantage, which I can understand, but for the other 3 schools, this was no huge request. In fact, they even said they would set aside my application and not review it until I sent them the unofficial score from my second GMAT. I even got "good luck" emails from a few schools. Also, from the very beginning when I would call Haas with questions regarding applying through The Consortium, they would give me answers which were for general applicants. I had to go through 2 or 3 different people before I was finally put in touch with someone who had a clue about The Consortium. I almost got the feeling like they were turning their nose up at me because I was a Consortium applicant. Also, Haas would not even get me in contact with a faculty member to answer some specific questions I had about one of their concentrations. They said that was not possible and just referred me back to their website. Again, this was the complete opposite of the way the other 3 schools treated me. Haas is a great school and I don't want to come off as the bitter applicant who got turned down by them, this is just my own personal experience with them.

Hey all - I got 2 long winded questions for everyone out there. These are 2 things I've been thinking a lot about and would love to hear people's thoughts:

1) For all students that have been admitted (potentially only to 1 school) and already know which school they will be attending this fall - have you paid your deposit yet? Or are you delibrately holding off until after the fellowship decisions, well knowing that you will attend that school regardless of fellowship decision. I guess my point is - do you think paying your deposit clearly signals your intent and so a school might be LESS likely to offer you the fellowship bc they might feel they already have you "wrapped up" so to speak and dont need to throw money your way to entice you. On the flip side, maybe its good to pay your deposit and show your intent bc no one likes rejection so a school might be MORE likely to offer you the fellowship if they know you will be attending their school in the fall. Am I over analyzing this or is it worth considering? For the record - i have not paid my deposit, but will be attending Johnson in the fall regardless of how anything else shakes up. I'm just debating whether or not i should just pay my deposit already or still play a little "hard to get".

i don't have the answer because i'm not on the adcom (obviously) but.... i think it doesn't matter.... if johnson wants to offer you the fellowship, they will. if don't, they won't. i don't really think there is anything you can do to persuade them otherwise.

i like to think that schools say "we're offering XX number of fellowships at the draft" then they look at their consortium applicants and rank order them based on who they definitely want to offer the fellowship to and then the alternates. think about it this way, if you ranked them 2nd and they want to give you a fellowship, but your 1st choice decides to give it to you instead (since they get first dibs), then i'm assuming they move on down the list and offer the next person the fellowship.

or -- they could very well say, we're only going to offer these people fellowships and everyone else can go into debt... but i like to think it's the former

i say all of that to say... the decision has probably already been made and if it hasn't, you probably can't affect it either way. but if you're still super concerned about this, just pray about it (if you're the praying type). i find that it helps :)

Thank you armymba2012 and everyone else for the feedback. I'm not one to normally resort to prayer - but for a full tuition fellowship, I'll try just about anything!
