would refers to a future action in the past.
In this sentence the action had already happened.
soldiers were as soaked after walking in temperatures exceeding hundred degrees for four hours.
Here walking in high temperature is compared to walking in rain storm.
So E is correct.

I would just like to add that
would is NOT only the past tense of a future action "will': it is also used as a conditional verb.
Also, a lot of test prep companies discard "having" constructions.
Having is probably the best constructions when it is used to express implication.
For example
Having not studied for weeks, Joey failed the test.
Having failed the driving test, Chandler tried to woo his way in.

Would is especially used with if construction to establish a hypothetical situation.
For example,
If I had taken the flight, I would have arrived on time.

Using if and would together in same clause is incorrect, but if used in different clauses is OK.
In a IF x then y type constructions x and y are different clauses

I actually got this one incorrect :lol: "as if having walked"

I understand why E is correct

Although I did it correct, I have one question here.

According to 3rd conditional,
If+ past perfect, Subject+ would+have+Vrd

But here "were" is used instead of "would have soaked".
Why am I wrong here?
