Even though a notable hedge fund manager dumped more shares of ABC company in March as in any month since the October 2008 credit crisis, the price per share of ABC company in October were not as low as market analysts had previously expected.

(A) as in any month since the October 2008 credit crisis, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as

(B) as had been in any other month since October 2008, the sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what

(C) then there was in any other month since October 2008, the sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as that which

(D) than in any month since October 2008, the sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as

(E) than in any other month since October 2008, the sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what

1. Strike out A, B, C because of As and then
2. Between D and E -- I selected E because of any other -- Its a comparison with all the other months
3. I also think what should be used for correct comparison

Marking for review.
OE is E
b/w D and E, E is correct because of parallelism as shown below.

sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not
as low as
what market analysts had previously expected.

Whereas in D

It says

sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not
as low as
market analysts ....

and sales is being compared to market analysts.

Surely this is not a question which could appear on the GMAT, because option E entirely changes the original meaning by removing mention of the Credit Crunch?

although i have got option E, i have also noted your point while looking for the correct answer.

Can we assume that 2008 financial crisis is a well-known fact.

[quote="GMATPill"]Even though a notable hedge fund manager dumped more shares of ABC company in March as in any month since the October 2008 credit crisis, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as market analysts had previously expected.

(A) as in any month since the October 2008 credit crisis, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as

(B) as had been in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what

(C) then there was in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as that which

(D) than in any month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as

(E) than in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what

E is correct answer as there is a paralellism and idiom error in original statement
for correct comparison than in is correct and as in is incorrect
verb error in line as low as market analysts had previously expected, changing the acutal meaning

Dear Expert why option D "(D) than in any month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as" IS incorrect?
What change in meaning does it make if we do not use"other" along with "ANY" as done in option D.
Why is it necessary to use WHAT in the end as done by correct answer E

GMATNinjaTwo Dear Sir, Can you please explain in detial why D is incorrect? Is it because of the comparison between sales vs market analysts? or is there something more to it. Thanks

(A) as in any month since the October 2008 credit crisis, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as The sentence is trying to compare shares dumped in March with shares sold in other months - usage of "as" is incorrect since "as" is used to indicate sameness. Eliminate.

(B) as had been in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what Same error as (A). Eliminate.

(C) then there was in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as that which The sentence is trying to compare shares dumped in March with shares sold in other months - usage of "then" is incorrect since "then" is used to indicate a point in time. Eliminate.

(D) than in any month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as This is an attractive answer option. Only potential issue is the comparison between stock share sales in March and analyst predictions is not very clearly brought out. We can hold on to this at this point.

(E) than in any other month since October 2008, sales of ABC company's stock shares in March were not as low as what This is perfect. The problem in (D) is resolved by the usage of "what analysts predicted". Correct answer. Eliminate (D).

Hope this helps.

How I tackled this Question:

'As' - when used as a conjunction, then it shows the similarity between two different things. But here we are comparing the sale of company stock shares for two different months.

'Any other' is the right usage as we are comparing the selling of the stock shares of the same company and in the same year.

Stock shares should be referred by a plural pronoun 'were'

And 'E' is the best fit!
