Several sections of the Great Sequoia forest in Northern California was closed due to flooding from a massive rainstorm, which lasted five days and caused puddles to form on the paths.

A) was closed due to flooding from a massive rainstorm, which lasted five days and caused puddles to form on the paths

B) were closed due to flooding from a massive rainstorm, which lasted five days and caused puddles to form on the paths

C) was closed because of the flooding from a massive rainstorm lasting five days and caused puddles to form on the paths

D) were closed because of the flooding caused from a massive rainstorm lasting five days and caused puddles to form on the paths

E) was closed due to the flooding from a massive rainstorm, which lasting five days and causing puddles to form on the paths.

Since the subject of the sentence is "Sections", the verb associated with it should be "were" and not was. This removes options A, C & E.
Option D makes the sentence illogical by saying " Several sections were closed.....days and caused puddles to.....paths". It was not the sections that caused the puddles but the massive rainstorm.
Hence option B is the right choice!

+1 if you like my explanation!

BY POE if u go,, the answer is B... but usage of DUE TO is not fit IMO

There is a lot of ambiguity around the usage of due to.
I try to stay away from such rules that are not very clearly defined.

A better approach is to look for more solid reasons of eliminating.

Subject verb agreement:

The subject is Sections(not forest) which is plural so the verb should be in plural form i.e were(not was)
So options A and C and E are wrong

In option D "lasting" and "caused" are not parallel so option D is out.

Hello, oshaar. This e-GMAT article does a better job explaining the difference than any short answer might provide. I hope it helps.
