Do you think people who got invites at HBS stand a greater chance of an invite at Stanford? What are your thoughts on this? Are the profiles of both school so different?

I spoke to a senior professor at Stanford and he said only 35% of students at Stanford got into both HBS and Stanford. I think the two schools look for different candidates, that or there are so many good candidates out there that the luck of the draw plays a big role.

I guess that there are many candidates that don't really want to apply to HBS. Pretty sure not everyone applies to both schools because they may be looking for something different. Say entrepreneurship so they may apply to Stanford / Berkeley and MIT. But I also agree there is a large amount of luck in the process and I'm pretty sure its much more difficult to tell the odds for someone getting in at Stanford versus someone getting in at HBS. It seems to be rather unpredicatable in fact.

Cheers

Seems like the invites stopped coming out for a couple days, any word today yet?

Also, curious (1) if anyone knows whether the adcom purposely match you up with alumni interviewers who are either in your current field, or who works in the field you mention you want to work in? (2) how many candidates do each alumni interviewer interview in round 1? (3) is sequencing of invites also restricted by alumni interviewers' availability?

If answer is yes to (1) or (3) above, then that might explain the delay or order of the invite. After all, I can't imagine someone at GSB manually matching you up by location, industry, time, etc. So there must be a database systematically bumping or delaying the order in which your application is read and pushed through based on some of the above fields.

(1) is definitely true from the mouth of an interviewer at GSB, to the extent that is possible of course. Had a case of a friend who was a finance guy but couldn't be matched with a finance GSB alumnus because they knew each other so had to interview with another guy in different industry

(2) that certainly depends on #of candidates and # of alumni available, but sometimes an alumni can interview 2 or 3 or even more if there aren't other alumni in the area

(3) Not too sure about this one but possibly since the process to schedule the interview is fast so I guess they wanna make sure they have at least some options of potential interviewers upfront. Not sure how systematic it can be though, but I guess that some options come out of the system and then a person may decide, I don't think it is 100% automatic cause they can't risk an error frankly

Hope that helps,

I think (3) is accurate and a main contributor to invitation distribution. I keep telling myself invites are delayed until they find enough available alumni in a location (NYC for me) to interview everyone they want to, and then they will send out those location invites in bulk. Especially since from what I hear certain adcoms are responsible for certain locations. Could just be wishful thinking though, but that's how i'm envisioning it.

Just finished my interview... Left feeling quite good, and of course now questioning everything.

I may not have been as clean as I would have been typing out my answers, but I felt like I told my stories effectively.

I was a bit surprised that the interviewer didn't ask any of the typical questions like "why Stanford?", "why mba?", "walk me through your resume/introduce yourself".

The interview lasted 55 minutes and only consisted of 4 questions, each with a series of follow-up questions to understand the details of the story.

Tell me about a time you felt effective?
Tell me about another example?
Who is your mentor at work?
Tell me about a time where you worked with a difficult colleague?

The interview was almost too relaxed, may have led to me getting a little bit sloppy on a couple of anecdotes. Also at the end I asked a few questions about my career and for one of them he answered "if you do end up at a top business school that shouldn't be a problem" which wasn't overly reassuring. I may be over-reading it though.

Now the waiting game... Good luck to everyone else!

haha I hope so!!!!

There were other sub-questions, but they were based on those four. For example, after telling a story about a "time I felt effective" where I was given a lot of responsibility there was a follow-up along the lines of "but why were you given that opportunity instead of someone else?" where I could have answered about some strengths I have (I didn't answer well, but that would be the way to do it).

Nada today?

Just twiddling my thumbs here in the northeast. Pay per productivity ratio today is off the charts--not just b/c of Stanford, but b/c it is Friday and Halloween.

If you guys want to guess, my costume involves me wearing a clock...

It does feel interesting because the wave of interviews that have gone out so far seem to be around NYC and the Bay Area. I wonder if international interviews are delayed? I work at a traditional feeder firm to business schools, and no one I know of has heard back yet.

Where did you get NYC and Bay area from? From what I have seen on this thread, we have a UK, Canada (Toronto) and LA so far. Not seeing any pattern yet in where (geographically) invites are going.
