FROM NewsUCLA: A quick Round 1 update
Happy Thursday! It's been a little over a week since our Round 1 application deadline, and adcoms have been super busy reading files. It's time for a little break away from the iPad to grab some coffee, do some stretches, and post a brief status update for our Round 1 applicants.

Interview invitations have started going out this week, and we anticipate sending invitations regularly until about mid-December. After that, the volume of invites will decrease significantly, though it's still possible for some invites to go out even up to a few days before the Round 1 decision release day. Keep in mind that the entire UCLA campus will shut down for our annual winter closure the last 2 weeks of December so we will not be sending invites or conducting interviews during that time frame.

Admissions interviews are conducted primarily by our 2nd year student interviewers, either in-person on campus or via Skype. Both platforms are perfectly fine and there's no preference for one vs. the other - it's all about what is more convenient for you. Some non-local candidates choose an on-campus interview so they can visit campus and sit in on a class while they're here. A detailed post on the admissions interview is coming soon, so stay tuned!

Ok, break's up, now it's time to get back to those files. Please let us know if you have any additional questions and we'll be happy to help!

Congrats to everyone getting interview invites! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. For those still waiting on invites, hold strong and remember, it's been less than a week since the application deadline... many more invites are still to come. Good luck!

Thanks for being available to us. You've definitely added a personal touch to this admissions process for UCLA. That helps us a lot because sometimes we feel like we're nothing but numbers to fill some school's quota based on our industry/ethnicity/region. I think every school should have a student rep (unofficial or official) on this board as dedicated as you are.

I was wondering how scholarships work. Is that something the admissions folks decide and offer based on who the top applicants are? Or is it based on what you want to pursue? When would we be notified? I'm asking because this is a crucial tipping point for me. To me, a full scholarship to UCLA is worth far more than a non scholarship admit to HBS.
I am happy to help out in anyway I can. It wasn't long ago when I was in your shoes, so I know what it feels like :)

In terms of scholarships, it's essentially broken down into two different buckets, merit scholarship and donor fellowships. The admissions committee decides for both types of scholarships. Both are based on merit (GPA, GMAT, leadership, WE, etc.), however, the donor fellowships have more aspects that a taken into consideration. What they look at depends on the fellowship. For example, there are donor fellowships for people from specific regions of the world, for people coming from a certain background, or for people planning on pursuing careers in a certain area. That being sad, there are also general donor fellowships based solely on merit like the merit scholarships. Here is a list of the various fellowships, although the criteria for each isn't specified, https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/office-of- ... ellowships.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Holy crap, that's a giant list of named fellowships. 131 fellowships! That's more than 1/3 of an entering class 8-)

Yes, I think. The e-mail ends in hobsonsmail.com for me. I have no idea how this info might be relevant to anything though.

Noticed that the "app submitted" email was sent via the Hobson domain. Wanted to make sure it won't be detected as spam is all.

For me, the invitation email came from [email protected] (sender's address). However the domain the email used was sjc01.hobsonsmail.com

If I can recall properly, the website instructions did mention somewhere to add hobson domain in mail contacts so that the recommendation mails don't land up in your recommender's junk mail. I've zero idea about the invite mails

Quick question on the documents to the early interview invitees/current students -

The Email asks us to provide "Original, hard-copy undergraduate academic documents, certified as official in original ink by your school (not by a notary), including -
Degree certificate or diploma in the native language of your school's country, showing the exact degree awarded and its conferral date"

Are we expected to send the original degree cert? Or would a photocopy with an official stamp suffice?
