Governor Smith’s religion during the campaign made him a target of prejudice and insinuation, as some charged that his loyalty to the Popesuperseded his loyalty to the United States.

A. Governor Smith’s religion during the campaign made him a target of prejudice and insinuation, as - religion during the campaign suggests that religion was during the period of campaign. There is another error: him has no noun in the sentence since subject is Governor Smith’s religion
B. Governor Smith’s religion during the campaign made him a target of prejudice and insinuation and - same as A
C. During the campaign, Governor Smith’s religion made the governor a target of prejudice and insinuation, as- Grammatically correct. No meaning issue
D. Religion of Governor Smith made him a target of prejudice and insinuation during the campaign and - with as the sense of reason is lost. Change in intended meaning
E. Governor Smith was made a target of prejudice and insinuation by his religion during the campaign, as - his religion did not made him a target , change in intended meaning

Is it right to eliminate option D on the basis of the absence of 'The' in the beginning of the sentence? Shouldnt the option be 'The religion of GS'?
I saw the error and eliminated the option right away without reading the sentence ahead. Since I had already analysed that option C was better, I eliminated D confidently.
Looking forward to your guidance.
TIA!

You need to read every option completely.
As for 'the' at the beginning of option (D), I would prefer not having it.
The religion of GS seems to say 'that particular religion' made him a target. What I actually want to say is that his religion made him a target.
In any case, 'and' is an error and that's that.
