Tough and Tricky questions: Decimal.

If j and k each represent positive single digits, and y = 2.j3k, what is y rounded to the nearest tenth?

(1) j > k
(2) If y is rounded to the nearest hundredth, the result is 2.74.

Rounding off a number to nearest tenth digits depends on the Hundredth Digit of number and Tenth digit of number so we need to know the value of j to answer the question

Statement 1: j>k
Case1: j = 3, k = 4 and Rounded Off number y = 2.3
Case2: j = 4, k = 5 and Rounded Off number y = 2.4
NOT SIFFICIENT

Statement 2: If y is rounded to the nearest hundredth, the result is 2.74
i.e y may be either 2.73k where k is greater than 4
or y may be 2.74k where k is Less than 5

But since j= 7 therefore y rounded to the nearest tenth will be 2.7, Hence,
SUFFICIENT

Answer: option B

Great Question
Here, rounding y to nearest tenths will result in 2.J (as the next digit is 3)
Thus we need to get J. We don't to find K
Statement 1
J>k
Clearly since multiple values of j can be computed from this=> This statement is insufficient
Statement 2
From this statement we can conclude two things
1)J must be 7
2)k must be greater than 4

As we already know that we don't need k we just need J and we have got J as 7
Thus this statement is sufficient to say that Y rounded to nearest tenths would result in 2.7
hence this statement is sufficient

Hence B
