Hi guys,

In most SC questions, I'm still solving them intuitively rather than by using the rules. I've improved but I'm not doing well consistently. If there is any other source you think might be helpful for me to strengthen my concepts, please do let me know.

Thanks

Hi,
I know how it feels after putting in so much effort.
Look from my experience after avenging the GMAT, is that it is all about approach and little bit of skill. Even after 710, I would say I am dumb in verbal part. There goes my story - Every SC question has a rule and a trap involved - You need to master the trick and identify the trap. For CR - there is a mechanical way to identify the answer from the issue given at hand. For RC - it needs practice and your skill of comprehending a boring passage in a quick time.

Though I am not a expert in this - I learnt all this from https://www.gmat-scholar.com : The guy who runs the show, Avi has all these tricks up his sleeves.

My suggestion would be have a call with him. His consultation is free of cost and definitely worth a shot. Reach him @ +91 70640 00130.
Then decide for yourself.

Check out EmpowerGMAT or eGMAT's SC courses. SC should not be solved intuitively by non native speakers. Consistency and hence confidence will only come once you are sure of your method. "intuition' is not a method, it should be the last resort.

Also, solve OG and verbal review at a minimum. When you are advanced enough in your preparation, buy exam pack 1 and question bank 1 for GMATPREP.

My concern was that I was solving questions intuitively as opposed to using the standard methods. I was randing around 60% just using this across all difficulties, I wanted to correct this.

Thank you, appreciate the advice. I'm looking at EmpowerGMAT and eGMAT both to try and select the best of the two. I'm inclined towards EmpowerGMAT at the moment however.

I will consider purchasing the Question Bank and the Exam pack as well. Thanks!

Hi Thank you for your response, I will get in touch with him. I was looking for something more along the lines of self study since there isn't enough time and I need to decide my own pace. I have another week before I give it my next attempt.

I'm doing reasonably well in CR's and RC's. Around 80% or more are correct across every exam, I was primarily losing out on SC's which is why my focus was on that.

Thank you, I'll keep you posted about my progress.

Hi Ranjeet! Since you mention that you've decided to go for self study and are especially looking for improvement in SC, thought I will mention that our sentence correction book Sentence Correction Nirvana is perhaps the only book that offers a score improvement guarantee, and is especially designed for non-native speakers.

After reading the book twice (yes! it's an academic book, and so must be read twice in all seriousness, to reinforce the concepts), you will start looking forward to solving SC questions!

The book is available on Flipkart and Amazon.in. You might want to refer to these sites, to also read testimonials of how readers have benefited.

If you want to sample a chapter before deciding to go ahead with our book, please PM me know your mail-id (along with the chapter that you would like to sample) and I will be happy to send that chapter to you by mail.

However, I noticed that your first post in this thread was made on 12th August and you've booked your GMAT on 26th August. Considering these steep timelines, I am slightly concerned about the kind of improvement you can realistically expect in this short time-frame, especially considering the fact that your Verbal scores have largely been quite modest in all your mocks.

hey,

My attempt is on 7th sept and my scores in mocks are similar to yours.

I think the score you got was pretty much in line with your mocks. Yes, you could have done better if you were not exhausted, thats for sure :)
Tip: Think of yourself as a robot when you give exam, just focus on the present question. This will help I guess.
Anyways, good luck with your next attempt, do let us know how you perform. All the best :)

Haha yeah, I guess so. I was relying on the fact that I usually do much better on test day as compared to mocks. Thats been the trend with my SAT and GRE.

Either ways, I guess there is a lot of scope for improvement for me, I'm working on it at the moment. I'll be writing the GMATPrep CAT2 real soon to see where I stand.

Thanks for the tip, I'll keep it in mind for my second attempt and hopefully this one will go as per plan.

Do you guys suppose I should read into my GMATPrep Score? I got a 680 (Q49, V32) on August 1st, immediately after which I got 640 on my GMAT. I got 710 (Q49, V37) on GMATPrep 2 yesterday. The breakdown of wrong answers was:
Q: 11 wrong (3 PS, 8 DS)
V: 11 wrong (6 SC, 3 CR, 2 RC)

Ignoring the time constraint and assuming that my target score is 750, what do you suppose an ideal breakup should be for the mistakes made, with the assumption that I expect to score less in verbal.

Hi Ranjeet, unfortunately it is just not possible for anyone to provide that kind of a breakup, for the simple reason that there is another extremely important input to your final GMAT score: Difficulty level of the questions that you get correct/wrong.

So, it is not just about the number of questions you get correct/wrong.

Just few days back, one of our students gave a couple of GMATPrep tests. On one test, he got 6 Quant questions wrong, on the other test, he got 12 Quant questions wrong; in both instances however, his Quant scaled score was 50. Hope this illustrates the point.

Thank you for your reply Ashish. I was just looking for a ball park figure with 700+ questions so as to evaluate how well prepared I am, but after reading your explanation, I do understand how that question might not have been a valid one.

I did also look through the preview of Sentence Correcton Nirvana as well actually and I thought it was really good from what I saw.
