Total number of wheels on the truck = 18
Number of wheels on front axle = 2
Remaining number of wheels is 16
but each of the other axles have 4 wheels on each of them
so remaining number of axles = \(\frac{16}{4}\) = 4 axles
so the truck has 5 axles in total i.e x= 5
substituting this value in given formula
T = 1.50 + 0.50( x − 2)
T = 1.50 + 0.50 (5 - 2)
T = 1.50 + 0.50 * 3
T = 1.50 + 1.50
T = $3.00

Correct Answer - B

The toll T, in dollars, for a truck using a certain bridge is given by the formula T = 1.50 + 0.50( x − 2), where x is the number of axles on the truck. What is the toll for an 18-wheel truck that has 2 wheels on its front axle and 4 wheels on each of its other axles?

(A) $ 2.50
(B) $ 3.00
(C) $ 3.50
(D) $ 4.00
(E) $ 5.00

We need to determine the toll for an 18-wheel truck that has 2 wheels on its front axle and 4 wheels on each of its other axles.

Since there are 18 wheels and 2-wheels on the front axle and 4 wheels on the other, we have 1 axle for the front 2-wheels and 16/4 = 4 axles for the other wheels. Thus, the truck has a total of 5 axles and its toll is:

T = 1.5 + 0.5(5 - 2)

T = 1.5 + 1.5 = 3.00

Answer: B

(A) $ 2.50
(B) $ 3.00
(C) $ 3.50
(D) $ 4.00
(E) $ 5.00

for front one axel we have 2 wheels
so for other 16 wheels we have 4 wheels per axle ie 4 axle
total axel = 4+1 ; 5=x
hence the toll T = 1.50 + 0.50( x − 2) ' 1.5+1.5= 3
option B ; $3

The key detail in this question which I totally missed is it's an 18-wheeler. Follow the details towards 5 axles...
