The distance from Shane’s house to his university is 27 x 10^6 inches, and Shane’s car gets 23 miles to the gallon on average. If he has 20 gallons in his gas tank, does he need to stop for gas on the way back to school? (1 mile = 63360 inches)

Hi,
the distance is 27 * 10^6..
the average is 23 miles per gallon and total 20 gallons are there..
so total miles it can travel = 460 miles ..
given 1 mile = 63360
in inches, the car can travel = 460 * 63360 inches = 4.6 *6.336 * 10^6...
clearly no of digits are the same ..
so we will have to calculate further..
4.6 * 6.336 > 4.6 * 6.. TO MINIMIZE CALCULATIONS
4.6 *6 = 27.6..
so the car can travel > 27.6 * 10^6 and the distance is 27*10^6..
ans is NO, he need not stop for refuelling..

Distance= \(\frac{27*10^6 inches}{63360 inches/mile}\) = 426.14 Miles
Range= 23 \(\frac{miles}{gallon}\) *20 gallons = 460 miles
