At a particular graduation party with 300 guests, 70% of the guests brought gifts, and 40% of the female guests brought gifts. If 48 males did not bring gifts to the party, how many females did bring gifts?

Hi,
the correct method
total = 300..
70% of 300 = 210 got gifts..
90 did not get gift, out of which 48 are males, so remaining 90-48=42 are females..
But 40% females brought gift, so 60% did not get it..
so 60% = 42, 100%= 42*100/60= 70..
ans 40% of 70 =28
B
answer took close to 1 minute..
But given the choices, it can be answered in 10 seconds..
we are looking for 40% of females..
since number of females has to be an integer, 40% of that integer has to be a multiple of 4..
ONLY 28 is multiple of 4 in given choices..
NOT that you will get this everytime BUT we should be ready to take advantage of opportunities thrown our way..

Let total number of males = M
and total number of females = F
M+F = 300
=>M = 300 - F --- equation 1
(40/100)*F +(M - 48) = 210
=>(2/5)F + (M-48) = 210 --- equation 2
From 1 and 2 , we get
(2/5)F + (300 - F - 48) = 210
=> - (3/5)*F = 210 + 48 - 300 = -42
=> F = 70
Number of females who brought gifts = (2/5)*70 = 28
Answer B
and total number of females = F
