To solve this problem one needs to understand that students can fit into any one of the four categories
Total students = 800
22% are juniors = .22 * 800 = 176
74 % are not sophomores which means that 26 % are sophomores
26 % sophomores = .26 * 800 = 208
160 students are seniors
freshmen are 800 - 208 - 160 - 176 = 256
we are asked to find how many more freshmen than sophomores are there among the sample of students
256 - 208 = 48 students
Correct answer - B

In a sample of 800 high school students in which all students are either freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors, 22 percent are juniors and 74 percent are not sophomores. If there are 160 seniors,how many more freshmen than sophomores are there among the sample of students?
A. 42
B. 48
C. 56
D. 208
E. 256

isn't the question should ask "how many more sophomores than fisherman are there"??

TOTAL = 800;

Juniors = 800*0.22 = 176;
Seniors = 160;
Sophomores = 800*(1 - 0.74) = 208;
Freshmen = 800 - (176 + 160+ 208) = 256.

How many more freshmen than sophomores are there: Freshmen - Sophomores = 256 - 208 = 48.

Hey guys,

This one is easier than it looks

We are given all of the percents, just in sneaky ways

We are told that 22% are Juniors

We are told that 74% are not Sophomores, meaning that 26% are Sophomores

We are told that 160 students are Seniors

\(\\
\frac{160}{800} = \frac{2}{10}\) = 20%

Add up the sum of the percentages we know:

20% + 26% + 22% = 68% are not Freshmen

That means that 32% are Freshmen

We are asked for the difference in number between Freshmen and Sophomore, however

Let's take the difference in percent:

32% - 26% = 6%

The difference is 6%

What is 6% of 800?

Sounds complicated and annoying right?

Here is a trick

Break the number into 10% and 1%, which is easy, you just move a decimal, and then add them up as necessary

10% of 800 = 80

1% of 800 = 8

6% = 1% * 6 = 8 * 6 = 48

There are 48 more Freshmen than Sophomores

The answer is B

You can do this on any problem that has annoying percents, it's a great time saver

No. of juniors = 22%*800 = 176
No. of seniors = 160
No. of not sophomores = No. of seniors + juniors + freshmen = 74%*800 = 592
Therefore, no. of freshmen = No. of seniors + juniors + freshmen - No. of juniors - No. of seniors = 592 - 160 - 176 = 256
Therefore, no. of sophomore = 800 - not sophomores = 800 - 592 = 208

No. of juniors - No. of sophomores = 256 - 208 = 48
Hence B
