Hi shubhampathak1sp,

You have a pretty decent profile. Your GMAT score of 710 works in your favour and most certainly showcases your academic prowess. However, while you are from a tier 1 college, your GPA is on the lower end, both in undergraduate as well as masters. Having said that, your percentage can be a slight issue while applying to INSEAD as it is a top B-school. However, if you pose the right alibi to justify why your GPA was low, you can easily overshadow this drawback in your profile. You can draw attention towards how you were looking to build your profile holistically and were involved in various projects and extra-curricular activities. Make sure you highlight the major takeaways from each endeavour undertaken.

Speaking of your work experience of 5 years and 6 months, inclusive of your tenure at one of the Big-4 brands brings you at par with your competitors. My advice here would be to highlight your projects which are impactful and value-added in a bigger and efficient manner, in order to differentiate your profile. Thus, you should focus on the quality of your work, the positive impact you created, and how you went above and beyond and bloomed in the role.

Another significant aspect that schools focus on is extracurricular activities as they are looking for a comprehensive profile. You have mentioned that you have got a decent amount of EC and certifications, citing which, you need to dig deep into the details of each endeavour, connecting the dots as to how you’ve benefited from it. In case you want to build your profile further, you can take up volunteering work at local shelters or NGO’s as it would help showcase the socially responsible side to your personality.
Additionally, If you have any sort of international experience, INSEAD does favour it. If not, you can always talk about the international exposure you got while dealing with international clients. You can emphasize on the projects you did, events conducted or being a part of any international conference. This will bring you at par with the other candidates who may have the international experience that you lack.

To boost your profile, you can further highlight CSR activities to showcase responsibilities taken up and the impacts created by you.
Given your school choice, INSEAD falls under the dream category. Since it has a stringent acceptance rate, you have a 40-50% chance of getting into dream schools. So it is recommended that while applying to business schools, a better strategy is to target a mixed bunch of schools from the dream, competitive, and safe category as this would allow you to hedge your bets wisely.

Moreover, since, in your profile GPA is the drawback, I would recommend you to focus more on European schools as they are known to be flexible with the GPA requirement. Additionally, you could drop in an email at the schools to get confirmation of your eligibility.

That said, here are a few European schools you can consider:

COMPETITIVE: SSE, ESSEC, ESCP, IE Business School
SAFE: EDHEC

Lastly, to complement your profile you need to begin prepping for a strong application that includes essays, letter of recommendation, statement of purpose, and resume that highlights all your strong suits, gives reasoning for the weaknesses and displays how you’d be a good addition to the cohort. Also, it is suggested that you apply in the upcoming round to enhance your chances of receiving an admit from your target schools.

To get more insights into the B-schools that will be compatible with your profile and needs as well as to get a more personalized profile evaluation where you can receive expert suggestions on how to upgrade your current profile, you can take our FREE Profile Evaluation service, the link of which is added below.

NydhruvKashyap
Background: Indian Male, 28 years old

GMAT: 700(Q50, V35) IR: 6
Work Ex: 52 months(and counting)
B.Tech CGPA: 3.3
PGDM(Sales & Marketing) CGPA: 2.8

For the applications I am planning to focus primarily on my work experience, which is completely in managerial roles across different companies, and functions. I worked for a one and half year stint at Saint-Gobain from where I am planning to get strong LORs. All three companies I've worked for are MNCs, and there is progress in the roles I have handled. Didn't get an opportunity to work outside India, but handled vendors from multiple locations(Germany, China). The company I am working for currently is a Joint Venture between an Italian MNC and a major Indian Player(3 year old JV, so it's like a well funded startup). The work profile is different from the average Indian IT applicant, and the entire work profile is related to different industries in the retail B2B and B2C segments. I am hoping that having a prior MBA should also put me at a slight advantage over other candidates. School marks are great, 90%+ in CBSE, but I don't think that matters much. How good are my chances?

Hi NydhruvKashyap,

First and foremost, looking at your GMAT score of 700, you are definitely on the right track since you’ll be able to target most of the top-notch B-schools. However, your CGPA of 2.8 in your PGDM which is the most recent degree that will be considered by the admission committee, is unfortunately, a bit on the lower end. To compensate for the same, you need to pose the right alibi by talking about how you were more inclined towards gaining practical knowledge and honing your skills through extracurricular participation.

Speaking of your extracurricular activities, you haven’t provided any information and since schools are looking for a holistically developed profile, you should definitely shed some light on the same to showcase how you went above and beyond in your endeavors and how you will be a great value addition to the school. To give you a brief idea of how to go about with this, you can maybe talk about the clubs and associations you were involved in, the teams you led, certifications you undertook, and most importantly your volunteering activities along with NGOs' works. This part of your profile will basically highlight your soft skills paired with your social skills which will ultimately work in your favor.

Furthermore, you have mentioned your work experience which has spanned over 4.5 years wherein you have worked on varied amounts of projects under 3 different MNCs with progressive roles. While these experiences are definitely praiseworthy, you will still be facing a lot of competition from applicants who have worked in the big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE, etc. To set yourself at par with your competitors, you can focus on highlighting the kind of projects you handled, the value you added to these projects, and the major takeaways you were able to gain from the same.

Apart from this, you have given a brief snippet of your school days and academic proficiency which sadly doesn’t hold much relevance for the master’s program you are applying for. Hence, you should only focus on details and the subsequent endeavors from your undergraduate onwards.

In addition to the above suggestions, you can also take up certifications like CFA,
CSR activities and volunteering activities to further build your profile. This will basically showcase your thirst for knowledge and a penchant to always upgrade your endeavors be it academically or professionally.

All in all, since you haven’t mentioned any program or school specifically, to get further personalized recommendations and information regarding the B-schools, countries, and the programs that you can be targeting, you can drop us an email at [email protected] and I will be happy to further guide you on the same.

Hope this helped!

Hi team,

Looking to get my profile evaluated here. Aiming for Sep21 intake. Thanks in advance.

Australian Female 28
GMAT: 700 (Q50 V35 IR8)
GPA: 3.2 from top Australian university (major in actuarial science, it is a fairly hard degree)
Language: speak 2, learning the 3rd
WE: 4 years in big four advisory arm, specialised in technology and advanced analytics, manager

Contribution: mentoring for students on non-for-profit consulting cases; career mentor for international students (been doing this for nearly 3 years, helped more than 50 students)
International experience: Moved to Australia during high school and stay ever since; Travelled to 10+ country; Worked with multiple nationalities (due to the working environment in big 4); Worked on global initiatives and with teams overseas;
Leadership: lead project team and solution development; managing performance for juniors (2); lead firm level community initiatives.

Additional: CFA, certified translator (I passed the certification exam in Uni as a hobby but never really practiced)

I am planning to focus on my contribution in my essay as 1) I think mentoring experience shows my willingness to share my experience with others and inspire others, which is something Insead values 2) I think the leadership and international experience can be seen from CV and travel history. I am slightly worrying about my GMAT as it is not on the high end, not sure whether I should re-take. But at the same time, I have limited capacity to study on the exam due to the workload and the additional commitments to my mentees. Also 4 years of working experience might be too short but I made to managerial position after 3.5 years which is considered fast track in big 4.

Keen to hear your advice.

10- Heck ya! you come to our B school with a scholarship

Hey vamkrispk,

You have a pretty great profile.

Academically, you have a decent GPA, which showcases your academic prowess. While SRM is a great school, top B-schools generally shortlist applicants from the top 10 Schools of the applicants respective countries. However, while your grades and brand do play an important part, you can compensate for this by highlighting your extracurricular activities and other endeavors because AdComs are looking for applicants with holistically developed profiles.

As far as your work experience goes, since an MBA is a manager's degree and requires significant work experience, your 5 years of work experience would put you at par with other applicants. You should explain and highlight more on your leadership roles and major projects of your work and how these experiences helped to develop and further groom your skills and knowledge. While SBI is a renowned indian brand, you would be competing against applicants from the big four companies. Hence, you can compensate for this by highlighting the projects you took in your role, how you have gone beyond the role, any initiatives you took and any kind of impact created to showcase your profile better.
As you haven’t mentioned any details about your extracurricular activities, I’d like to let you know that Extracurricular participations play an important role in strengthening your applications as B-schools are on the hunt for all-rounder profiles. That said, it is essential to shed some light on any CSR initiatives or other endeavours you’ve taken up at your organization. Volunteering initiatives or certifications undertaken would also count towards your extracirruclar initiatives. Thus, you should dig deeper into this aspect and bring out varied skills in your profile or seek to build in this area if the need be.

Coming to your GRE, since INSEAD comes under the dream category, you would require a score of 320 and above to increase your chances of acceptance. So retaking your GRE to boost your score by 5 to 7 points would help make your application stronger.
Since INSEAD falls under the dream category one thing to keep in mind is, Dream schools have a very stringent acceptance rate of 12-15%. As for the final verdict, I’d say You have a good profile and have a 5/10 chance of getting accepted into the school. Hence, it is always better to target a mix of dream, competitive and safe schools. To help you understand better, I’ve suggested a few schools that you could be targeting according to the different categories.

Dream : HEC , INSEAD, LBS
Competitive : ESCP, ESSEC, ESADE, FSFM, IE
Safe : EDHEC, Skema, Grenoble, IESEG

To increase your chances of getting admitted at these schools you would need to ensure that you have a very strong application consisting of well drafted Essays, LORs and resume to back your profile. You need to showcase your journey, what makes you different from your peers and how you are a great value addition to the school.

On this note, if you are looking to target the top B-schools and want to prepare a strong application to meet the upcoming deadlines right on time, you can check our comprehensive all in one solution that has helped thousands of applicants get into their dream schools including schools like HEC, INSEAD and LBS!

Hi,

I am not overly concerned with your GMAT or 4 years of work experience- what you have done in these 4 years, your leadership examples, your fast track promotion will matter more than the number of years at work at this stage. So go ahead if you wish to apply.

Regarding the essay (I guess you are talking about candid description), it will really depend on what the entire essay is about and what the rest of your essay stories are so it will not be right to give you any advice. I want to point out one thing though- what is written in your CV and travel history would be mere bullet points- the experiences can only be shared in the essays- case in point is the international experience- what you saw/felt/learned and how it shaped you can be mentioned in the essays.

hope that helps.

I feel like I meet all the requirements(GMAT/Language etc) but wasnt sure how competitive my profile is when compared with others.

Hi thomfor,

yes, your profile is quite competitive.

Just like Namita said, your 700 GMAT score is fine since you don't come from an over-represented background. And 4 years of work experience is also fine. INSEAD's average is around 5-6 years, and the range goes from 3 to 8 years. So, by the time of matriculation, you'll have around 5 years, which again, is just fine.

In terms of requirements, when it comes to INSEAD, usually we talk about admissions criteria, and INSEAD has four:

(1) Academic Capacity -- this is where GMAT comes into play
(2) International Motivation -- international experience and outlook
(3) Ability to Contribute -- to the class, your peers, the school...
(4) Leadership Potential -- this is assessed via your career path and career progression

You should aim at putting together an application that shows that you meet all four admissions criteria. The best place to do so is the essays. And, particularly, Motivation Essay #1 (i.e. candid description) is the best place to showcase your strengths since, besides being a "candid description" of yourself, is also a strengths essay. So, as Namita also said, don't rely purely on your CV to show your strengths and how you meet the admissions criteria.

I hope this helps.

Thank you very much.

Warm regards
Alex

Hello Experts!

I would like your valuable thoughts regarding my admission prospects to various MBA programs in Europe (LBS / INSEAD / Oxford). My profile details are provided below.

Background: Indian Male, Age 36
Class X: 80.5%, State Board
Class XII: 82.8%, State Board, 20th rank in the state
Undergraduate Education: Bachelors of Technology, IIT Kanpur (2002-2006, CGPA 6.8/10), one of the top undergraduate programs in India
Pre MBA Work Experience: 2 year experience with Knowledge Process Outsourcing companies in India. Worked in the domain of Business Research and Intellectual Property Research
Post Graduate Education: MBA from Management Development Institute (2009-2011, CGPA: 6.9/10), one of the top Business Schools in India, major in Finance and Economics.
Post MBA Experience: ~ 9 years in top tier private sector banks in India
Job 1: Worked as a Manager for 5 years with the largest private sector Bank in India in the Investment banking division. My job entailed execution of the debt financing mandates for Indian and overseas clients of the Bank. Worked on >30 transactions aggregating > USD 1 billion in value. Received a promotion after 3 years. Worked across geographies and with cross cultural teams including banking and legal teams in Singapore / Hong Kong / Canada / USA
Job 2: Presently working as an Assistant Vice President for a leading private sector bank in the Investment Banking division. Involved in the origination, execution and monitoring of corporate finance transactions for domestic and overseas clients of the Bank. Worked on transactions aggregating ~ USD 500 million. Received my promotion in ~1.5 years

Post MBA Qualifications: Cleared all 3 levels of the CFA program administered by the CFA Institute USA.

Hobbies and Interests / Extra Curricular Activities: Avid marathon runner, completed several editions of the Mumbai and Delhi Marathon. Practicing Value Investor. I have been supporting various charities like Helpage India, Child Help Foundation through the years. Participated in various clubs and volunteered for student festivals during college.

GMAT: 720 Q48, V40, IR 6. (I may retake the GMAT as I believe that my performance in Quant is not up to the mark, I was consistently scoring Q50/49 in mocks)

Previously, I did not think about an overseas MBA earlier and I was content to finish it from a good Business School in India. At this juncture in my career, I have gained corporate banking experience across the best banks in India along with exposure to the best banking practices. I am now seeking international opportunities in corporate finance / banking and I believe that an international MBA program would help further these objectives.

I am a little sceptical of my prospects as I am older than the average applicant for these programs and that I belong to an over represented applicant pool (Indian Engineer – Go figure!). It would be very helpful if the experts here can provide me with realistic insights regarding my admission prospects.

I earnestly thank all of you for your time and consideration!

Warm regards,
Abhinav

Hi acemeister29,

Let's first talk about how competitive your profile is. Your acads are great (20th rank in the state- NICE!) with a great undergrad college, IIT Kanpur definitely comes among the most reputed programs in India. Now about your GMAT, if you think you can perform better than this, go for a retake. Why leaving any chance?

Now your work-experience. It definitely seems great working with the top banks in India and now performing the role of Assistant Vice President. I think your work-ex definitely makes a case for a strong leader in you and surely exhibits great international experience (which makes your reason for pursuing MBA for global opportunities stronger). Your ECs and hobbies sound amazing. So, if for once we eliminate the age-factor, you provide a well-rounded amazing profile.

Now, let's talk about the elephant in the room. Why age becomes a crucial factor is because an MBA is designed for people who are at a young stage of their career and thus MBA helps in giving a great push for their career. Now, how you can make your case strong? First, your reason for pursuing a full-time MBA is to fetch global opportunities. Think if this is the only way of achieving this? Is it possible if you work 2-3 more years and then go for Executive MBAs, Global MBAs? (Here is a broad list of EMBA and Global MBA programs) Ponder over it and clear your head with absolute relevant reasons to pursue an MBA. If you get clear about it, most of the part is sorted. There is one another concern of business schools over choosing an older MBA candidate and that is if the companies would be ready for hiring an older applicant with this vast experience and this is because they have profiles better suited for younger candidates and give their career a great push. So, here too, you need to have detailed research about the kind of companies come in your target schools and the profiles they offer and if these are suitable for your career aspirations. Even if they are not, but you really like the community of a school and every other aspect of the schools can serve a great fit to your career aspirations, make sure you present the case that you have a strong network and can get a job post-MBA.

We are delighted to guide you for the European schools and INSEAD as our consultant himself is an INSEAD alum and know exactly what the school is about (have a 100% success rate for INSEAD aspirants). Also, we have great expertise in European schools and can help you understand these schools better (Read successful stories). Feel free to book a free session with us as per your convenience.

Hi Abhinav,

Have you considered the Sloan Fellowship programs at MIT, Stanford (MSx) and LBS? These programs, esp the first two can be a better fit for you

Thanks a lot for your valuable inputs Kashish. I shall do more research on the employment opportunities which would be available post completion of the program as it would be an important consideration. From what I know, the Investment Banks have a clear preference for younger candidates.

I would also write to the ad-coms of the respective schools seeking their opinion regarding my suitability for their programs.

I earnestly thank you for taking out precious time and providing guidance.

Warm regards,
Abhinav

Rather than generalizing the whole industry, I, from my experience, can say that the age is factored in by specific companies (say, Goldman Sachs or McKinsey) and so, do your research well for the companies and the profiles they offer and do analyze your career expectation post-MBA as well. FYI, Insead, Judge and LBS do offer good opportunities in Investment banking and are quite open to older candidates.

And definitely, it's a great idea to take adcoms' opinions. Best of luck! For any suggestions, feel free to reach out to us.

Cheers!

Hi azie786,

thanks for sharing your profile.

I like what I see, especially, the international side of your profile. As you know, this is very important for INSEAD. Your 720 GMAT score is slightly above INSEAD's average so, since you don't belong to an over-represented pool of applicants, it is good. I also like the fact that you have experience in leading teams, and you have decent extra-curriculars.

I do have some questions for you, though:

a. College and GPA. Where did you do your undergrad? Does your university follow a 4.0 GPA system? Or is that 3.3 GPA the result of converting your grades to a 4.0 scale?

b. Career Path. Your career path is a bit unclear to me. Could you list all your positions chronologically? This is very important in order to assess career progression and leadership potential. Feel free to alternatively share your CV or LinkedIn profile with me ([email protected]).

c. Goals. Typically, when it comes to admissions, goals are broken down into short (immediate post-MBA) and long term. I guess working for a leading tech firm in Silicon Valley is your immediate post-MBA goal? If so, how about your long-term goal? Also, not that INSEAD doesn't place graduates into firms in the US, but given your goals, it would look more natural to apply to US schools. Would you be open to the idea of working in other geographies, e.g. EU or Asia, as well?

Thank you very much.

Warm regards
Alex

Hi Spriyam,

INSEAD evaluates your potential based of the following criteria:
1. Ability to contribute
2. Leadership skills
3. International motivation
4. Academics

I see a hint of 2, 3 and 4 in your profile based on whatever you have shared. However, I would really need to understand more details from you in order to evaluate your profile better:
1. Your post-MBA goals
2. Why do you think you are ready to go for an MBA?
3. Impact you have brought with your work
..And point 4, which is quite critical for me to evaluate your profile for INSEAD. As you belong to a highly competitive pool of applicants (The Engineers from India, but don't worry, I belonged to the same pool and went to DCE myself), I would really need to understand what you really are as in individual beyond your work/resume (pointers that you have very well elaborated on, in your post). INSEAD really wants to see how aware you are of your surroundings and what do you do beyond your work in order to set things. I can see that you have mentioned a couple of things in your post, and I would like to understand your experience better (let's say about your Volunteer experience at Super-30, or any other problem that you might have solved for others at work- for eg, the kind of field complaints that you might have handled).

Additionally, make sure you list down the gaps that you have identified in your profile that you think an MBA from INSEAD will help you fill in order to achieve your post-MBA goals. What’s going to matter most in your application is how you connect all the dots and build a great story. If you'd like, I am happy to hop on a call sometime this week to discuss your chances in further detail. Feel free to book my calendar as per your convenience. I am also happy to suggest more schools that best match your profile on our call.

Cheers!

Hi acemeister29,

From the first glance itself, you have a very unique and strong profile given the fact that you are applying for a second MBA degree. To begin with, your undergraduate GPA of 6.8 is a bit on the lower end of the spectrum, however, having graduated from IIT will definitely help overshadow your low GPA score since schools do pick out applicants from the top 10 colleges of every country. You can also talk about your percentile or rank in the class to supplement the low GPA score. Coming on to evaluate your performance in your MBA wherein you’ve earned a GPA of 6.9 and have graduated from a fairly decent university, posing the right alibi for the low GPA is a must. You can be highlighting your extracurricular participation or any other practical experience you were involved in.

Talking about your extracurricular participation, you have definitely shown your true worth and skills through the diverse sects of areas you have been involved in some way or the other. These activities highlight your proactive attitude and your socially responsible personality which can easily vouch for you being a great future leader. Furthermore, you can add more value to your profile by digging deeper into the various endeavours you undertook and how you went above and beyond to excel in the same by elaborating on the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways.

Coming on to your work experience of altogether 11 years when you have held noteworthy positions of responsibility and executed huge scale projects, in my opinion, you have a strong professional front, however you will still be facing a lot of competition from applicants who have worked in the big four companies like KPMG, EY, DELOITTE, etc. Having said that, to set yourself at par with your competitors, you ought to focus on highlighting the kind of projects you handled, the value you added to these projects and the major takeaways you were able to gain from the same.

Moving on, you have also mentioned that you have cleared all the three levels of the CFA program which is very impressive given the fact you are inclined towards the field of investment banking and finance and it also showcases your constant thirst to upgrade yourself in order to always stay in the competition lane.

Moving forward, your GMAT score of 720 is definitely very impressive which will allow you to target most of the top-notch B-schools. Furthermore, you have mentioned that you are a little skeptical about your QA score of 48 coming in the way of your overall selection chances which is not really true because the overall GMAT score is what the schools really focus on. Thus, if you are absolutely sure about boosting your score by 40-50 points, only then consider going ahead for a retake, otherwise, a GMAT score of 720 is already pretty competitive for you to bag admission in the top tier colleges of the world.

Most importantly, you need to connect the dots and pose a very strong reason for why you want to pursue a second MBA degree. Moreover, you have raised some concerns regarding your late admission in the MBA program most specifically related to the age factor. Well to put it straight, you don't need to worry about this since an MBA is a managers degree the more work experience you have, the more you can resonate and give back to the program.

Coming to the schools you can target, you can look at a mix of dream and competitive category schools:

Under the dream category (schools where the chances of acceptance are 50%) you can target- HEC, LBS, WHARTON, LSE and NYU.
Under the competitive category (schools where the chances of acceptance are 70%) you can target - USC MARSHALL, ESSEC, FOSTER, FSFM, ESCP and IE.

All in all, what you need to highlight is your profile USP’s and how you can be a great addition to the school whilst posing the right examples to legitimize your claim in your SOPs and Essays. Additionally, you need to ensure that your LORs and Resume, equally depict the strengths of your profile. All of these form an important part of your application where we will help you in presenting the proper justification for your purpose of pursuing a second MBA degree right now.

Lastly I would advise you to Book A FREE consulting session with one of our expert consultants who will run you through the whole process and also help you with personalized suggestions and upgradation that you can do to further strengthen your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x!

Below you will find the link to our Book a FREE consulting session.
