Not clear how permitting is modifying the Subject 'Many' , after the that clause it should modify Atkins diet .

So again any reason why choice E is wrong based on grammar or logic ??

yes, E is incorrect because it used 'like' to present examples. Remember on GMAT, Like can never be used to provide examples.
