For all options , I have considered the core of sentence ,stripping out modifier.

A.No verb for subject Self portrait present and "it" is creating ambiguity.

B. It says Self portrait was the highest price ever paid for a work by a female artist at auction.
How could Self portrait be price
So wrong .

C. Self portrait was sold for $5.1 million, the highest price ever paid for a work by a female artist at auction.

No fragment plus clear modifier describing price.
Correction Answer

D.Self portrait being highest price..
Incorrect

E.Self portrait was the highest price..
Incorrect.
