No i think it is fine.

[quote]The students at Smith School that were surveyed for the rankings indicated that they were extremely happy with the quality of instruction, price, and diversity of courses at the school.[quote]

If students are satisfied with courses and other similar factors then only thing that remains are the extra-curricular stuff improvement, which they are aiming for, so if they can increase that, that would fulfill their objective. Hence, E.

A. The student satisfaction category encompasses a number of subjective factors, including value, quality of faculty, and facilities.--->It states a fact that students satisfaction includes some facts. But we don't know how many factors are included. So investing in few factors such as library, classroom space, and lounge areas could be outnumbered by other factors, which causes high level of dissatisfaction.
B. Yearly program rankings are an important factor in attracting the best candidates to a school.----> Just a stated fact.Irrevalent
C. Smith Business School has already secured the $50 million needed to upgrade its facilities.---->Irrevalent
D. The students surveyed for the business school rankings indicated that the number and diversity of courses offered at a school was a large component of student satisfaction.---> out of scope as we are focusing on dissatisfaction.
E. The students at Smith School that were surveyed for the rankings indicated that they were extremely happy with the quality of instruction, price, and diversity of courses at the school.---->It says that students are already satisfied with these factors so imprvong other subjective factors such as library, classroom space, and lounge areas could get the students satisfaction at high level.Hence right answer

Conclusion - Spending 50 million on upgrading its facilities will increase satisfaction and rankings

A. The student satisfaction category encompasses a number of subjective factors, including value, quality of faculty, and facilities. Students value facilities as one of the factor, but it is not the sole factor. Without further information that other factors will not degrade, it is too early to conclude that satisfaction will increase. However, KIV this choice for now.
B. Yearly program rankings are an important factor in attracting the best candidates to a school. OFS.
C. Smith Business School has already secured the $50 million needed to upgrade its facilities. OFS. Financing funds is not part of the argument
D. The students surveyed for the business school rankings indicated that the number and diversity of courses offered at a school was a large component of student satisfaction. This choice is a weakener
E. The students at Smith School that were surveyed for the rankings indicated that they were extremely happy with the quality of instruction, price, and diversity of courses at the school. This choice is the correct answer as it eliminates few other factors which someone may point out to argue against the claim.

I still don't understand how E is a better answer than A.

Choice E) The students at Smith School that were surveyed for the rankings indicated that they were extremely happy with the quality of instruction, price, and diversity of courses at the school. --- Although students are happy with all these factors, how can we assume that the quality the university's library, classroom space, and lounge areas play a role in student satisfaction? It could play a role but it also could not. So I think it's hard to say that this answer choice provides strong support for the proposal's success.

Meanwhile Choice A) The student satisfaction category encompasses a number of subjective factors, including value, quality of faculty, and facilities. --- we know that libraries, classrooms and lounge areas (which is part of a school's facility) for sure plays a role - whether it be small or large - in student satisfaction. If we improve these areas (as suggested by the proposal), I am more confident that the extra funding can increase student satisfaction.

Can someone shed some light on my thinking?

Expert, I read all the posts but I am not convinced with the OE as E.

My analysis of the argument is -
Premise 1- Business school had a very low rating student satisfaction.
Premise 2- To increase Student satisfaction and National Ranking, School decided to spend 50$ in upgrading X Y and Z.

Now the question asking us to find an answer which provides STRONG support that School's plan will succeed?

Option E: just tells that students are satisfactory about A,B and C criteria. That does not mean if school works on X,Y and Z criteria, school will succeed. What if, if the school had many other areas to improve apart from A.
How does this bolsters the conclusion?? Please explain..

Although I landed up choosing my answer as E, I am still not fully convinced on D being an incorrect option.
Premise: factors x,y & z have been introduced to curb dissatisfaction

Choices D & E both signify that students are okay with factors others than x,y & z. Any thoughts?

It depends on what you mean by "this type of reasoning question", I suppose?

But the more useful answer is that it's best to stay away from non-official questions on verbal. The GMAT spends several thousand dollars developing each individual test question, and even the best test-prep companies can't compete -- and McGraw Hill's questions are usually particularly awful. So stick with official GMAT questions, and maybe LSAT questions if you need some extras for CR and RC.

I hope this helps!
