what is wrong with option E

"which is higher than it is in"

Which can refer to GDP growth in above sentence and it can also refer to GDP growth as its antecedent.
Would someone pls explain out here.

Many thanks !

Hi Abhishek,

E) Boasting one of the world's fastest growing economies, Brazil showed a real GDP growth rate of 7% in one year, which is higher than it is in most developed countries of the world that year.

which refers to the closest noun before the comma. So in this case which refers to 'year'.
So you are basically saying that the year is higher than it is in most developed countries. :?
Does not make any sense, since you want to compare growth rates. D) and E) are incorrect

Hi teaserbae,

when you read "and" on the GMAT, check for parallelism.
Brazil showed [...], and higher than that of (incorrect; verb and adjective)
eg. Brazil showed [...], and increased (correct; verb and verb)

Boasting one of the world's fastest growing economies, Brazil showed a real GDP growth rate of 7% in one year, and higher than that of the most developed countries of the world that year.
"And" is a conjunction that makes the part after the comma an independent clause. But the clause lacks a full subject + verb!
=> (C) is incorrect

A) higher than in (comparing GDP with countries)

B) higher than that of

C) and higher than that of ("and" is wrong)

D) which is higher than in ("which" is modifying "ONE YEAR")

E) which is higher than it is in ("which" is modifying "ONE YEAR")
