HI friends,
Can someone please guide me as to what sort of opportunities are available after MBA from ISB? If anyone may kindly share the linkedin profile/ mail id of someone who was from Govt. sector and did her/his MBA from ISB?
Hi Saksham,
Govt sector/PSU people constitutes approximately 10 to 20% of the batch in top B schools in India like ISB and IIMs. This is just to give you some perspective that there is a good number of people from Govt/PSU sector who pursue MBA from ISB/IIMs and make their career transition. Coming to the question of post-MBA opportunities for Govt/ PSU folks, it will depend a lot on the profile of that particular candidate viz. which PSU, what job function, no. of years of work experience etc. Following are two examples to give you some idea -
1. A guy from ONGC who has hands-on experience in the Oil & Gas industry can be a very good candidate for management consulting in top firms like Mckinsey.
2. A person who has worked in the operation or maintenance dept. of a large utility company like NTPC and managed a large team of blue-collar workers can be a very good fit for Operation manager role in E-commerce companies like Amazon.
Hope these examples give you some perspective regarding post-MBA career options.

For more information regarding MBA and career switch from PSU to Private sector check the free resources at https://psutoprivate.com/.
All the best!

Hello,
Kindly Evaluate my profile.

Working as a Assistant manager in Public Sector Unit Indian oil corporation for past 4 years.

In the past 4 years, looked after project management for 1 year, operations maintenance for 2years and planner and material procurer for 1 year.

Planning to do my MBA outside India.
Kindly provide the B-schools best for me in US,Europe.

I want to shift my career from operations to consulting. So, planning to an MBA in consulting in place of operations management is a good Choice?? Or should I do it in operations

Academics:
Btech mechanical engineering: 84%
(not from NIT,IIT's but from state University)
12th: 98%
10th: 97%

Not much of co-curricular activities except in college tests.

Hi Siddhardhatanari,

First and foremost, you have a pretty competitive profile as evident from your consistently strong academic record in the form of your undergraduate percentage of 84%. Moreover, since you haven't given any details regarding your GMAT score, I would suggest that you aim for at least a 700 in order to target most of the top-notch B-schools.

Moving on, you have a total of 4 years of work experience, which is decent enough for an MBA program. What's more is that you are employed in the public sector which is a unique domain in comparison to the professional background of the majority of applicants. Not just that, but you have also held many managerial positions and responsibilities which will definitely work in your favour since MBA is a managerial program and B-schools give extra preference to the evaluation of work experiences. That said, you should also highlight the initiatives you spearheaded and the impacts you created in order to portray your potential and the budding leader within you.

Coming to your extracurricular activities, which is an equally important part of your profile since all B-schools are looking for candidates who possess a holistically developed profile, you need to basically highlight the endeavours you undertook ever since graduating such as certifications or any volunteering activities to showcase how you are constantly moving forward to upskill yourself throughout these years. I’d recommend building on this if you lack such endeavours under your belt.

Moving on to shortlisting schools for your profile, given your location preferences, here are the schools you can be targeting:

Dream (50% chance of acceptance) : Duke, NYU, Berekely, HEC, LBS, INSEAD

Competitive (70% chance of acceptance) : Washington Olin, Fordham, Texas A&M University, UC Davis, UVA, WHU, FSFM, ESMT, Mannhiem

Safe (85% chance of acceptance): Edhec, Grenoble, Skema, Kelley, Boston College, Rochester

On this note, to boost your chances of acceptance you can focus on optimizing your application (comprising your resume, LORs, and Essays) which is basically what differentiates you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses which in your case is your rather low GPA. Additionally, it also carries a 30% impact on your admission prospects which is why I would urge you to pay more attention to the same.

Talking about your dilemma in selecting your specialisation field as part of your MBA program, I’d like to shed light on the fact that your specialization should be chosen after taking into consideration the field you want to build your career in. In this case, since you are pretty inclined to delve into the consulting domain, you should pursue your specialization in consulting or a track related to strategy.

Lastly, since major chances of your acceptance depend on your application, if you are contemplating on how to draft an impactful application, you can check out our All-in-one service which is a complete end to end consulting process aimed at providing personalised application suggestions, unlimited edits and expert consultants who would constantly be there to help you throughout your application journey!

Till date, the all-in-one service has helped 3500+ applicants get into their dream B-schools while bagging scholarships worth 3.5 million euros. So what are you waiting for? Click on the link below to learn more about how you can boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3X!
