Neither.....nor..... is an idiom the same way as either....or..... is.
But we do use OR in normal cases too, and similarly NOR can also be used alone.

Comparison between A and E:

CORRECT: It is not a bird nor an apple.

Note that there is no comma before "nor".

However, in this problem, there IS a comma before "nor" because what comes after it is an independent clause.

A similar but easier example would be: I went to the store, and I ate an apple.

When you connect 2 independent clauses / complex clauses (not simple nouns), you add a comma before "nor", "and", "or", etc.
