Quote:
Let us assume Population====>100
10% is the total Rise
hence it will be 110 in 1991
now in 1980 10% were lawyers====>10 lawyers
now they increased with 20%
hence there will be 12 lawyers in 1991
we dont have any data regarding labor force hence all the options can be rejected right away.

but i have a doubt regarding option E
in 1980 10% of the population is lawyer
but in 1991 10.91% of the population is lawyer hence there is an increase in proportion of lawyers in the general population.

someone kindly have a look at it

Hi @shubham2312 As you have already mentioned that the population of lawyers in the general population has increased . This increase in population of lawyers contradicts the option E.
Quote:
E) The proportion of lawyers in the general population decreased from seven percent in 1980 to four percent in 1991.
Hence, your answer is correct.

thanks misread the question
my bad

Why is A or C not the answer ? Didn't understand how it can be ruled out ?

Appreciate any inputs. Thanks

We don't have sufficient information on the "United States labor force" from the given statements.
Hence all options mentioning "United States labor force" can be ruled out.

Option E) says that the proportion of lawyers decreased from 1980 to 1991 which contradicts the statement. Hence it is the best choice.

Yep, I got it.

A: Talks about two different populations, the United states labour force and gen pop. So even though the proportion of lawyers reduced in the US labour force, the labour force itself could have grown by such a large percentage that the proportion of lawyers in the general population would have remained same or even increased. Therefore we can't assume this to directly contradict the given statement.

C: Talks about the proportion of Lawyers remaining constant, but for there to be a direct contradiction to the statement given, the proportion should decrease as given in option E.

I believe even C can be called a contradiction.

If its not increasing, but its decreasing -> contradiction
If its not increasing, but its constant -> contradiction

I think C can also be right here. Any thoughts?

Say the lawyer population = N

Now the proportion this N is split into lawyers in the United States labor force vs others doesn't matter. C is just saying this proportion within the lawyer set is constant, not the total number of lawyers

Another line of thinking, which I am not too sure if it holds is may be population decreased for some reason (counter-intuitive but say there's a pandemic or something which affected the other people more than the lawyers), so it's rate of increase is -ve and lawyers have 0 or +ve rate of increase

Just saw the options again. Notice that even option C alludes to the United States Labour force, thus we're drawing comparisons between two different populations. The statement only talks about the general population.

The fact that % of lawyers remained constant is not a direct contradiction of the fact that rate of increase of % of lawyers is more than that of general population.
