So determined were Tim Peter's attempts to protect the nation's security, and his fighting for justice and protection from terrorists was steadfast, two leading political officers recruited Tim Peter into the government's secret coalition for anti-terrorism.

(A) and his fighting for justice and protection from terrorists was steadfast,
> Not parallel

(B) and fighting for justice and protection from terrorists was steadfast, so that
> Not parallel; "so that" is not approriate here

(C) his fighting for justice and protection from terrorists steadfast, that
> Not parallel; wrong structure (it should be: his fighting for justice and protection from terrorists was steadfast)

(D) fighting for justice and protection from terrorists was so steadfast,
> Not parallel & we need THAT after the comma,

(E) so steadfast his fighting for justice and protection from terrorists, that
> best option without "was" (so steadfast was his fighting...)

Hope it helps!

The GMAT no longer enforces the "possessive poison" rule. It is fine to use a regular pronoun to refer back to a possessive noun.

This is an unusual construction, so I wouldn't let it trouble you too much. If we cut out all of the underlined portion except for "that," we can see the main structure: "So determined were TP's attempts that officers recruited him." This is an inverted way of saying "TP's attempts were so determined THAT officers recruited him." Even simpler might be this: "Officers recruited TP because of his determined attempts."

So why the weird backward construction? That's where the middle part comes in. The author is trying to emphasize the intensity of Peter's commitments. The recruitment that comes at the end is important, but the sentence is emphasizing that this is just the result of his activity. What's happening in the middle is a case of ellipsis. The sentence might be clearer if it say "So determined were TP's attempts, and so steadfast was his fighting, that the government recruited him." However, the author is relying on our ability to infer that structure without a conjunction or additional verb. Similarly, we might say "So dark was the night, so quiet the wind, that if I closed my eyes I could imagine myself on the moon." It's a bit of an old-fashioned and poetic way to write, but I can't say the GMAT would never do this.

This may help you to see why we don't want C. E would have the same structure as the opener if we inserted the missing "was." C has an entirely different structure that doesn't match the opener. We could use this in a different sentence: "His attempts were determined, his fighting steadfast, and his views unwavering."

Will you pls elaborate more about option E

1. Don't we need "and" co connect "so steadfast ...." with previous clause ?

2. There is an occurrence of "were" in previous clause so will it be appropriate to assume "was" as missing ellipsis in here ? Generally ellipsis refer back to some earlier occurrence.
