Background - Indian Female with 4+ years of IT consulting work experience.
My journey with GMAT started back in 2013, right after my under graduation. I joined a coaching institute in Benguluru, India. But didn’t go through the preparation as I started working right away and had to spend lot of time at office.
After I have gained 2 years of work experience in 2015, I wanted to give a shot at GMAT. Back then I did not have access to proper materials as I was using the ones from my 2013 classes (Oh! proved to be such a bad strategy). Not just that, there were so many things lacking from my side such as proper research, proper resources, time. Could have done a lot better.
So, I went through GMAT and got a score of 620 (Q 44, V 32), which is a below average score and I was clearly not happy with it. After a couple of years, I moved to USA because of my marriage and my dream to do MBA in top 10 USA bschools was stirred up again. So, I decided to give GMAT another shot and I knew this time around I have to do it right.
This time I had a clear target in my mind and many posters on my wall - 740
I started researching about all the best available resources out there and eGMAT was the clear winner. I took their free trail, went through few materials and attended webinars. I most effective thing about eGMAT is that it is an online course, which gives you immense convenience to study at your own will and time. Also, I found solving questions online made me get used to the GMAT format a little better than solving from traditional books (I am someone who tried both. So you can take my word for it).
I purchased their quant and verbal packages right away and started the preparation. I had a proper schedule and pre set deadlines for each step along my preparation. I have allocated 3 months to complete eGMAT course including the scholaranium(Great tool!) and calculated the number of questions I needed to solve per day accordingly. Most of the days I solved around 100 questions/day. Once eGMAT is done, I started practicing Offical Guide questions and from there moved on to GMAT club questions. GMAT is more about continuity and perseverance. Initially, my accuracy was very low somewhere around 50% and there were times when I was demotivated and very reluctant to keep solving. That’s when your determination comes into play and you have to elevate yourself and get into the field again however many times you gotta repeat this. If you are going through this now, believe me, you will get there!
Quant Section:
From the beginning, I was comfortable with Quant and I knew I just needed a lot of practice. The only problem I had with quant was many a times, I made silly mistakes such as, missing minute details (like variable constraints) given in the question because of which my quant score was being pulled down. I realized that I was left with atleast 8 minutes in quant section every time. So, I started to utilize the time effectively by rechecking each and every question thoroughly before confirming the answer. This helped me avoid silly mistakes in quant.
Verbal Section:
Coming to the verbal part of my preparation, from my previous attempt’s ESR I could see that SC was my weakest area and my performance in CR and RC was above average. So, I wanted to improve my SC ability, since by doing so I can allocate time saved in SC to CR and especially to RC as it takes more time for comprehending.
RC Strategy -
I have attended a webinar in eGMAT for RC during which a statement by Payal stuck a chord with me. She said that often times we forget that the passage is a real pice of article coming from an authentic source. It changed my perspective towards RC and made me look at passages not just like some tool through which GMAT is testing me, but like a story that’s happened in the real world. It helped me immerse into the passage and assimilate information before answering the questions. It helped me a great deal with accuracy and gradually time taken for each passage.
CR Strategy -
Hands down, pre thinking strategy by eGMAT is the best approach for cracking CR questions. I know there are other ways in which you solve the arguments using equations, negation statements etc, which I think make CR complicated than it actually is. CR is essentially about our thought process, which fortunately can be developed with time through pre thinking strategy.
When I initially started practicing this strategy, I used to take a lot of time for each question but my time and accuracy were far better by the end.
SC Strategy -
Practice Practice Practice!!!
The quality of SC questions in eGMAT are spot on. Solved as many questions as I can and noted down each and every incorrect question into an error log (MUST). Went through the error log in regular intervals. With a lot of practice my accuracy increased from 40% to 90% by the end of my preparation.
End of it all, I was comfortable with quant but a little uncertain about the verbal part as I am not a native english speaker. I wanted to focus more on the verbal section. So, I started my test with verbal section. The order of sections during the test is a personal preference. Some might want to start with areas they are strong in and others with areas they are weak in. Whatever works for you!
Throughout the preparation the most important thing is to maintain the error log.
My error log alone was around 50 pages.
I went through just my error log the day before the GMAT.
The most important thing that GMAT pursuers must remember is the importance of a proper 8 hour sleep before the exam day. My least performance in mocks was when I did not have proper sleep the day before. Sleep enables us to focus for long periods.
This post cannot be complete without the mention of GMAT Club. GMAT Club was my best friend throughout the preparation for each and every topic. The number of hours I spent on this club each day is uncountable. Thankyou to the contributors in this forum. Your help is invaluable.

Congratulations on the great score, Sowmya Kora! And thank you for sharing your experience. You hit a few critical points that I really agree with.
We should treat the reading comprehension passages as real texts, real articles, and we should read these passages to learn something, not just to answer questions and pass a test. Once you adopt this attitude, you will find RC a much more pleasant experience and your score will increase as a result.
I cannot stress enough the importance of mental fitness. The night before the exam, and any other night you should get a good sleep. Studying for the GMAT is very exhausting. If you don't allow your brain and your body to rest you will not learn as efficiently, which means 1. you'd have to spend more time to learn the same amount and 2. you'd forget what you've learned at the most critical times

Congrats Sowmya. I think failing at practice questions and motivating ourselves everyday despite of it is a circumstance every high score dreamer of GMAT has go through. Like you said, this is a revered journey that makes us tough and prepared for the MBA.
I have few questions that if you answer will help me in my preparation too:
1. I am wondering how did you manage time to do 100 questions per day. I am assuming that you are also working full time.
2. Also, you mentioned about doing eGmat first and then moving to OG questions. Did you skip the OG questions that are interspersed in e-gmat preparation? If so, is there a reason behind it?
3. Also, can you elaborate your strategy for gmat club, like did you finish the sub-600 level questions, then moved on to sub-700 and 700+ level questions in verbal slowly?
4. You mentioned about error log on questions in e-gmat. Did you maintain a error log separately in a different website or can you elaborate more on that strategy ?
