On a certain farm, the onion and the pumpkin patch were each to receive x gallons of water for irrigation. The onion patch was 50 acres and the pumpkin patch was 60 acres. Once it came time to deliver the water, the farmer decided to transfer y gallons of water from the onion patch to the pumpkin patch so that each would receive the same amount of water per acre. Which of the following is equivalent to y?

1) x/3000
2) x/30
3)x/11
4)x/10
5)x/5

We can create the equation:

(x - y)/50 = (x + y)/60

60x - 60y = 50x + 50y

10x = 110y

x = 11y

x/11 = y

Answer: C

I think the key here is to understand that question is referring to water per acre

We are given x gallons each to Onion and Pumpkin with 50 and 60 acres of land respectively. So what is the water used per acre for both?

x/50 and x/60

Now, y gallons is taken out from Onion and added to Pumpkin such that

(x-y)/50 = (x+y)/60

solving for the equation gives us x/11 = y
