e) Decline in teenager and young adult population, fewer movies by big studios, and the rise of internet are the only possible explanations for the theater viewership decline

This choice misses the decline in the viewership of 30-40 years age groups so the above cannot be the only possible explanations? Isn't D a better choice

I had the same approach when i first answered this question. That's why i put it up here for a discussion.

IMO "young adult population" covers the said age group if you read the passage carefully.

Why is E the correct choice? Here in the argument stem it is written that "A number of reasons could have caused this decline"
------- therefore these should not be the only choice as mentioned in E. I narrowed down to D

D just tells you that internet is economical.. It would be s STRENGTHENER for the argument BUT not an assumption..

If the internet weren't economical, would the argument fall FLAT... NO...
It may be just that internet is easy to access and avoids strain of moving around..
OR
Even if it is economical, people could still go to movie hall because of the experience movie hall may give..

So D is not an assumption..

NOW why E?

I say that you ate pizza in the morning or may be cutlets. But there are reasons that you would not have eaten pizza or cutlets, so you CERTAINLY ate pasta.
How can I be so sure that you ate pasta and not noodles etc. I can be sure ONLY if there were only these 3 items with you, and therefore, if you did not eat the two of them, you certainly ate the third..

Hope it helps..

The following piece was written in 2001.

The 90s was a lost decade for the movie theater industry; the percentage of movies that ran for more than four weeks in theaters- a criterion that is traditionally assigned to a blockbuster hit- reduced significantly compared to that in the last decade. A number of reasons could have caused this decline. Firstly, the percentages of teenagers and young adults, the largest movie goers segment, in population declined in the 90s---(A). Further, there were fewer movies made by two biggest studios in the country----(B). However, Since the decline of viewership was also observed in the viewers in the age group of 30-40, and the viewership was down even for the biggest blockbusters, from the 2 biggest studios, the rise of the internet as a new medium is the certain cause of film industry's decline---(C).

The crux of the argument is.. Possible reasons for something can be A or B. But there are evidences to believe A and B are not the reasons, so C IS the reason...

What should strike you? Why C is a must if not B and A? Why NOT D or E?--D or E etc should not be an option at all to be sure of C

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends ?

a) All the data used in the relevant study is fairly accurate
b) Most people are oblivious to the names of studios behind the movies
c) The viewership record of the 80s is not very accurate because they were obtained manually
d) The internet provided easy access to new movies for free, making it economically improbable that someone would go out and watch new movies for a price
e) Decline in teenager and young adult population, fewer movies by big studios, and the rise of internet are the only possible explanations for the theater viewership decline

E gives us exactly what we are looking for..
However you will never find an assumption as stated in choice A-- a poorly worded choice.

Since there are quite a few inclined about D, let me delve on this two choices D and E

An Assumption is something that always holds true. Keeping this in mind please could you help me understand why the following thought process is incorrect. (My reasons for eliminating E)

(C) is the cause of something out of (A) and (B). But, for (C) to be the cause I need to only have (A) or (B). I could also have (D) or (E) and still have (C) as the cause. For instance... If I say basket ball is my favorite sport in school despite of cricket and tennis also being taught. Now it does not HAVE TO BE TRUE that I only have these three sports taught in school. I could have baseball too, but I can still prefer basketball. By adding another sport need no necessary break my conclusion The way I look at (E) is that it definitely is a strengthener but does not HAVE TO BE TRUE.

I completely agree with your analogy above, But its still have for me too see (E) as an assumption and not a strengthener. All I ask is "DOES THIS HAVE TO BE TURE"? and I am not sure if the answer is Yes!

HeyHoozan, Your sports example is not exactly analogous to the question. A better example would be - "In my school I need to pick a sport and as the doctor has prohibited me from playing tennis or cricket, I am going to have to pick basketball".
This obviously means that there are only 3 choices available to you, otherwise you wouldn't have said "have to pick basketball".

I hope this helps!

But in this case, this does not hold accurately true that my school has only three sports , if I am unable to play tennis or cricket and I am choosing Basketball that doesn't anywhere reflects that my school has only 3 sports , maybe I prefer Basketball to other games which maybe available to me like swimming , squash.........
It is only a possibility that there are only 3 sports in my school and it cannot be accurately or precisely said

It does if you use the words "have to". "Have to" in this sense would imply that you have no other choice. Although, I realize it's very difficult to create an example that replicates a GMAT question, so apologies if it's not the best example.

Brian123 is correct and the reasons are
1) We have to look for the best choice.
2) It is very difficult for any institute to replicate Verbal questions. You may find comparable quant questions but it is difficult to replicate the questions on SC and CR. So use these questions to better your reasoning and to sharpen your thought process in eliminating wrong choices and choose the best possible amongst the options.
3) When we get to the sports example. If I tell you that since you don’t play basketball and tennis at school, you play cricket, then the certainty that I have on your playing cricket must come from some fact and that fact is that there are only three games. Otherwise, how can I claim a thing about you with certainty.

Premise 1: The percentage of movies that ran for more than four weeks in theaters declined in the 90s compared to the 80s.
Premise 2: The decline was observed across all age groups, including teenagers, young adults, and even 30-40 year-olds.
Premise 3: The decline was noted even for the biggest blockbusters from the two biggest studios.
=> Conclusion: The rise of the internet is the certain cause of the film industry's decline.

The argument is trying to assert that despite other possible factors (like demographic changes and fewer movies being made), the rise of the internet is the definitive reason for the decline in theater viewership.

a) All the data used in the relevant study is fairly accurate.
This might be important, but it is not what the argument depends on to conclude that the internet is the cause of the decline. The argument assumes the data is accurate, but this isn't an underlying assumption specific to the conclusion about the internet.

b) Most people are oblivious to the names of studios behind the movies.
This is irrelevant to the argument. Whether or not people know the studios does not affect the argument about the internet causing the decline.

c) The viewership record of the 80s is not very accurate because they were obtained manually.
This would actually weaken the argument, as it questions the comparison being made between the 80s and the 90s. This is not the correct assumption.

d) The internet provided easy access to new movies for free, making it economically improbable that someone would go out and watch new movies for a price.
This strengthens the argument by providing a reason why the internet could be responsible for the decline in theater viewership. However, it's not the assumption that the argument explicitly depends on; it's more of a supporting premise.

e) Decline in teenager and young adult population, fewer movies by big studios, and the rise of internet are the only possible explanations for the theater viewership decline.
This is the correct assumption. The argument depends on the idea that the rise of the internet is the primary or only explanation left after considering other factors like demographic changes and fewer movies being made. If there were other potential causes not considered, the argument would weaken.

"A number of reasons could have caused this decline" this line is given in argument.
which means(IMO) that reason mentioned in option E may be important but there can be other reasons as well.
