Let's solve through options.

Pick 84 as it is divisible by both '7' and '4'.

The initial number of registered males: 84 [7 * 12]
Initial ratio of male and female: 7: 4

Therefore the initial number of registered females: 48[4 * 12]

Now some numbers of males and females were dropped and hence ratio was 5:3 and in the end males = 19 and females = 9.

Therefore, 84 - 19 = 65 and 48 - 9 = 39.

The ratio of 65: 39 is 5: 3.

Therefore, 84 is correct.

Quote:
At the start of a school year, a certain course had registered male and female students in the ratio 7 : 4. The ratio of male and female students became 5 : 3 after some students dropped the course. At the end of the school year, 19 males and 9 females had finally completed the course. What was the initial number of registered male students?

(A) 60

(B) 70

(C) 72

(D) 84

(E) 96
I know I sould really silly asking this, but can anyone break this down for me - I don't understand the question.
Start of the school year - 7:4
After students dropped out - 5:3
End of the year - 19M and 9F. Since 19/9 is not the same as 5/3 are we to assume that some students didn't complete the course?

84-19 =65.
School started with 84 male students and ended with 19. so is 65 the number of male students that dropped out?
I'm so confused. please help

Why B is not correct? I think B is also right.

Initial Male: 70, Female: 40
M:F after drop could be 20:12; or 25:15....
They all satisfy the final completion male and female number.
