Hey there!
My name is Mario, I'm a 29 y.o. Italian. I am currently looking at schools to apply for the 2021 intake.
I haven't taken the GMAT yet, thinking about waiting until test centers are open again (the whiteboard...), on the official prep I have gotten a 730 the last couple of times -hope the real thing is not far from that!- . I have a couple of years of corporate finance experience, and currently managing my family's business, which I intend on delegating during the MBA, returning to it after the program is done, and developing it across Europe (Italy, Spain, France).
I am not looking at changing industries, landing a job in IB, MBB, etc. I'm looking for an enriching and good overall experience, with some good hands-on education, truly applicable to a SME owner, and creating good relationships and networking.
I am looking at the following schools:
INSEAD:
- Shorter program seems to fit better my situation. On the other hand, less networking and depth of experience? I want to be able to get a strong academic experience, but also a social one.
- More convenient location for me. Beautiful setting and Ok weather. Have some knowledge of French, which I'd like to work on, seems like a good opportunity.
- It seems to be in the podium of all rankings, but you nonetheless see many more non-positive comments and reviews of INSEAD than of most other top b-schools (excluding HSW, which seem to be in a league of their own). Are these rankings accurately capturing the quality of the programs and their people?
- Quality of the faculty? Quality of the students? Student-life?
Columbia:
- The J-intake has a duration that really suits me. Prefer it to the 10m and the 2 year.
- Location is more inconvenient, but still, NY is very well connected to Europe. Too big a city for a meaningful MBA experience? (In my case, I don't know many people currently living in NYC)
- They claim to have a significant amount of students working in family businesses, specially in the J-intake, this and the f.b. oriented programs would seem to be useful.
- I get the sense that the faculty and students are, in a way, more qualified than INSEAD?
- Competitive admission process, I hope the having a non-so-traditional background (European, family business manager) with a decent GMAT score -although my GPA from a tier I Italian school is average, not great-, may give me a shot.
LBS:
- Also seems pretty attractive, getting some of the best attributes of the previous two. Don't know if too UK-focused?
Tuck:
- Didn't consider it at first, but I keep reading how wonderful the experience there is, how fruitful and honest the relationships, good faculty,...
- But, the weather... Distance to airports and major cities...
IESE:
- Convenient location, great city, ties to Spain (a pro, but also a con, want to diversify)
- Not sure if the program is as enriching as that of US b-schools or INSEAD / LBS.
Finally, considering my profile and my goals, I don't know if Kellogg, Haas, Yale, Cornell or IMD would seem good fits? I haven't been able to decide based on what I have read so far,
Thanks in advance for your help, much needed!
Mario
