From what I understood of this question, "Contractor B must be scheduled to work exactly two days after Contractor A is."
B should have been Thursday since B should be scheduled AFTER 2 days of A.

Anyone else think the wording was a bit vague in this one?

Martine is scheduling five contractors (Contractors A through E) to do various tasks during Monday through Friday of the upcoming week. For each day, exactly one contractor will be scheduled to work, and each contractor's task will be completed on the day for which he or she is scheduled. The scheduling must conform to the following constraints.

  • Contractor A must be scheduled to work on Monday.
  • Contractor B must be scheduled to work exactly two days after Contractor A is.
  • Contractor E must be scheduled to work exactly three days after Contractor C is.

Select from each drop-down menu the option that creates the most accurate statement based on the information provided.

Statement: Given the constraints, Martine must schedule Contractor B to work on___________and Contractor D to work on___________.

A. Monday
B. Tuesday
C. Wednesday
D. Thursday
E. Friday

Hi KarishmaB! Can you help me with this question? Why don't we count weekend days? Why contractor C works on Tuesday? Is it because of the constrain "For each day, exactly one contractor will be scheduled to work"? I though I count the next week when the other contractors might have finished... Thank you! :please:

Hi KarishmaB! Can you help me with this question? Why don't we count weekend days? Why contractor C works on Tuesday? Is it because of the constrain "For each day, exactly one contractor will be scheduled to work"? I though I count the next week when the other contractors might have finished... Thank you! :please:

The 5 contractors are being scheduled for the 5 days (Monday thru Friday of next week) such that each contractor works on exactly one day. It doesn't say anything about scheduling next to next week. We must schedule the 5 people on the 5 days of next week only.

Monday - A
2 days after Monday is Wednesday so
Wednesday - B
We are left with Tuesday, Thursday & Friday
C - - - E
Only if C were on Tuesday, then E can be on Friday. If C were on Thursday or Friday, we would have no day for E. Think about it - if C were scheduled on Friday, E would be moved to Monday of next to next week and on one day of next week, there would be no contractor. We must schedule all contractors on the 5 days of next week only.

Tuesday - C
Friday - E
Leftover are D and Thursday
Thursday - D

Note - Even if you get confused that 2 days after Monday must be Thursday, by that logic 3 days after Tuesday would have to be Saturday which is not possible.
Hence, we can fi sure out that 2 days after Monday must be Wednesday only.

so going forward for all the language of similar type, we will consider that particular day included in exactly two days period? or it depends upon the language of the question stem. i'm confused here

It might get people confused. But 2 days after doesn't mean 2 days gap in between. For ex. Let's say. Contractor A started work on 9:00 AM sharp on Monday, 2 days later it will be wednesday. Monday will be count as a day too. Hence, B is scheduled for Wednesday.

“Exactly two days after” always means move forward 2 days on the calendar.

If A is on Monday:
One day after Monday is Tuesday.
Two days after Monday is Wednesday.
So B must be on Wednesday.
