IMO Answer C

The sentence starts with "Since its opening in 1869", so whatever follows this phrase has to be something which can be opened. Option D cant be correct as transportation cant be opened (it can be done for sure, but it cant be opened in 1869). Option E also cannot be correct as Europe and Asia also cannot be opened in 1869 (wouldn't make sense!)

We are left with 3 options A, B and C as all of these statements start with "The Suez Canal", which definitely can be opened!

Option A - Usage of "Among" is incorrect. We are talking about two continents Europe and Asia, use of between would be better. Eliminate

Option B - I don't think there is something awfully wrong with the sentence. We can debate about "to a greater degree" and "by providing connection" but still looks ok as an option worth considering. Keep

Option C - This looks a lot better. Its concise, uses "between" and "by connecting Red Sea and Med Sea" is a lot better than "by providing connection" in option B. Between B and C, C is a clear winner. Select

Cheers!

Since its opening in 1869, the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

A) the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Easier introduces a comparison, where is the comparison?

B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Same as A. And wordy construction.

C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Correct

D) transportation by water between Europe and Asia has been facilitated by the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. "Since its opening in 1869" must modify Suez canal. Out

E) Europe and Asia maritime transportation has been relieved thanks to the Suez Canal, a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Europe and Asia maritime transportation: What does that mean?

A) the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.among is wrong..amoung is used for more than two.between should be used here.

B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.wordy a little.by water is little bit away from the transportation.creates some confusion.better to say transportation by water..

C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.cool...correct...still I don't think facilitated and eased give us the same meaning..still its fine I guess.

E) Europe and Asia maritime transportation has been relieved thanks to the Suez Canal, a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.the opening modifier since its opening should modify the suez canal.Wrong

A) the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Incorrect

uses among is wrong, between required

...eased ......to a greater degree.... - wrong

Incorrect

B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

D) transportation by water between Europe and Asia has been facilitated by the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

E) Europe and Asia maritime transportation has been relieved thanks to the Suez Canal, a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

this is no official question, and, so, i do not go into deep analysis.
in A, "among" is wrong.
in B, "by water ' is misplaced.
in E , "Europe and Asia maritime transportation" is wrong because long noun phrase such as " Europe and Asia " can not modify "maritime transportation". this error is frequent on gmat.
above are mechanical errors, but not meaning errors.there error are easy to realize. but we always have to pass a meaning test to go to OA.

in choice D, why do we use passive voice. if agent, who perform action is not important, we cut off agent and use passive voice. this is not the case in this problem. so, passive voice in choice D is inferior.
"by connecting..." in choice C show the method of main action, "facilitate". in choice D, we do not have the idea of method of the main action. this is wrong

The winner is: C

I was debating between B and C:
Quote:
B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
I don't see anything wrong with "to a greater or lesser degree/extent" https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/to%20a%20greater%20or%20lesser%20degree%2Fextent

Quote:
C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.
Concise, but dropped an important meaning: the transportation is now easier

IMO B is the right choice.

Since its opening in 1869, the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

with the opening modifier "Since its opening in 1869", the clause that follows should start with "Suez canal" - D and E are out

A) the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

Among Europe and Asia? in this context and usage of Asia and Europe. Its between Europe and Asia. A is out

B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

has eased the transportation ... by water? and to a greater degree than? there is no comparison here. Conservatively, we can still keep B and see if we have a better choice.

C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea.

This looks good with precise wording, 'connecting' phrase takes Suez canal as the agent. (facilitate means make easy) B is out and C is the answer.

A) the Suez Canal has made transportation by water among Europe and Asia easier by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. -- I don't particularly like that "transportation" and "easier" are so far apart in the sentence. Also "made transportation easier", "eased transportation" is far better. And again "providing a connection" when one just use "connecting". (Keep for now but not great)

B) the Suez Canal has eased transportation between Europe and Asia by water to a greater degree by providing a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. -- "eased" and "to a greater degree", "providing a connection" unnecessary redundancies in this choice. (Keep for now but not great)

C) the Suez Canal has facilitated maritime transportation between Europe and Asia by connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. -- This seems like a significantly refined version of the above choices. "facilitated maritime transportation" and "by connecting".. all redundancies have been removed. Correct answer.

D) transportation by water between Europe and Asia has been facilitated by the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. -- modifier misplacement. incorrect.

E) Europe and Asia maritime transportation has been relieved thanks to the Suez Canal, a connection between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. -- modifier misplacement. incorrect.
