Hi all,

I feel like solving the easy questions (500 level) and other things to sometimes be really time-consuming (although I sometimes mess up the 500-600 level questions too). I was wondering what your thoughts are on this? Would you suggest only solving the 700 and the extremely hard GMAT questions across all the sections to be enough and later take a look at the easy and medium things while solving the mock tests? (As usually, people say solving the extremely hard stuff makes your concepts in the easy and medium stuff solid too) or would you recommend spending time on the medium stuff too?

Hi Ravi,

This is the most common mistake students do. There is a misconception that solving 700 level questions or practicing more and more questions can get you to a good score. Unfortunately, GMAT doesn't work that way. GMAT is an adaptive test and to get to a level of 700, that is, for the algorithm to serve you 700 level questions, you need to first get easy-medium questions right. So, the first step has to be to learn the concepts and the methodology that help you solve these questions. Once you are comfortable with the methodology, you don't have to worry about the level of the questions because the approach remains the same.

How to learn the methodology?

If you have already gone through the concepts, then learn the methodology( deal with one topic at a time).
  • Know the question types that are tested on GMAT from each topic
  • Learn the methodology to solve those question types
  • Practice a few questions of that topic to get comfortable with the method (Do not time yourself at this stage)
  • Move to the next topic only if you get at least 80% accuracy
  • Once you are done with all the topics, start taking timed quizzes

I hope you understood the right approach to prepare for GMAT. Do not just rely on practicing questions. Spend as much time on analyzing the solutions as you spend on practicing questions. Compare your approach with the right one and identify at which step you faltered.
