One of the more difficult meaning based SC correction questions I've come across ...

I will try to learn something.

In B) As one of history's greatest painters and as an important contributor

Is the second 'as' incorrect (breaking the parallelism since the first 'as' should carry over)?

As one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh was not painting before his late twenties, and produced most of his best-known works during his final two years.

(A) As one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh was not painting before his late twenties, and produced most of his best-known works -,and is used to seperate independent clause.. the portion after and lacks subject

(B) As one of history's greatest painters and as an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh would not begin painting until his late twenties, and he produced most of his best-known works - would is for hypothetical situations where a simple past tense is required

(C) Though one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh had not begun to paint before his late twenties, producing most of his best-known works - had not begun is a past perfect tense. This tense is used to show case a sequence of 2 actions in the past. In this case the second action is missing

(D) Even though he was one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and he produced most of his best-known works - I was stuck between D and E chose this option thinking a contrast is required and got it wrong.. Reflecting on this option, i feel its the he was one of history's greatest painters is the trap here.. this implies he was one of the greatest painters in the past but not now in the present which is not the intended meaning

(E) One of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art, Vincent Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his best-known works were produced - Correct

Hope this helps. I would love to know your views on the same.

What is the source of this question ?
IMO... The quality of this question is really poor.
I have not seem Official Questions rely on such poor frameworks to decide between answer choices.
