IntroductionHi folks
I started my GMAT journey back in April 2021 as I thought 3-4 months of preparation time before scheduling my exam would suffice. Naturally, before I started my preparation, I decided to give an official mock exam to see where I stood. By then I had been a year out of my undergraduate degree and was working as a software engineer in a startup. To my surprise, the result of the mock test was totally disastrous. I had scored a 530 (Q 36; V 26) and the quant score especially took me aback given my engineering background. I realized that this GMAT won’t be a cakewalk like I thought it would be. After the next 3 months of preparation, rigorous practice and two gmat attempts I was able to score a 710 (Q 47 ; V 41 ; IR 6). Sharing some key points from my journey below
Role of E-Gmat in my PreparationWhen I started preparing for the GMAT, I was clear that I wanted to enroll in a course that took care of all the planning, materials and other factors for me so that I could totally focus on the studying aspect of my prep. I wanted a more personalized course instead of the standardized ones available in the market and that’s when I stumbled across e-gmat. I attended some of their free webinars regarding various topics and felt that they could provide what I was looking for. I think that it was one of the best decisions that I made. And so began 2 ‘intensive’ months wherein the course covered all aspects of GMAT Verbal and Quant in great detail. The course was so well planned – with detailed personalized action plans, topics divided into theory and application files - that those 2 months flew by. A shoutout to the scholaranium2.0 platform provided by e-gmat. Its not just a question bank but a private tutor in itself as it provides you with highly in-depth data analysis so as to help you with not only the sub-sections you need to focus in but also your weak areas within that subsection.
MY JOURNEYI took my 1st attempt in June’21 and scored a 690 (V 34, Q 49), which came as a shock to me since I was scoring 730-760 in all GMAT prep mocks, and my Verbal was on the weaker side but it was not that bad. It was a big hit for me. So as soon as I finished my exam I spoke to DJ (e-gmat) and he helped me calm down and chart out the next steps. Another thing which I should have paid attention to was that there is no ESR for online attempts. So, it was really difficult for us to hypothesize what went wrong but being the expert that DJ is he figured out that my timing got totally messed up because I got two RC in first 15 questions and I wasn’t able to recover from that.
DJ made a hyper specific plan for me to rectify my issues which were mostly with pacing the exam. After 20 odd days I gave the online test again and was really disheartened to see a 680 (V34 Q49) as there were no improvements whatsoever. A lot of things didn’t work out for me: I was really stressed unlike the 1st time I took the exam; There was lag in the test browser which added to my timing woes, and the initial software check, etc. added to the pressure. I was heartbroken, to say the least, but I had definitely not lost hope because deep down I knew I had it in me.
I spent the next 2-3 weeks focusing on pacing my exam and increasing my concentration during the test. This prep phase was more relaxed than the other attempts as DJ rightly pointed out that I was putting on too much pressure on myself and needed to relax. As all of my prep mocks and sigma-X mocks were over by now I signed up for Veritas Mocks, which were harder than the normal mocks but helped me build my test stamina. I also did a lot of introspection in these last few weeks to calm my mind. I think that really helped me see things clearly and reduced a lot of pressure.
So finally gave my 3rd attempt in last week of July 2021 and scored a 710 (V41 Q47). I messed up in quant as my quant score was steady around Q49-50 but the verbal score gave me my much-required boost. Planning on giving it again and finally reaching my target.
