Conclusion : It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed.

Premises : The ship’s operational budget is sufficient to pay the salaries of the new officers, but not the salaries of additional legal and bureaucratic employees needed to process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers.

Which of the following, if true, will most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn above?

Quote:
A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.

This statement strengthens the conclusion by providing additional reason for not hiring new disciplinary officers.
Incorrect

Quote:
B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.

We are not concerned with any other trading vessel. Therefore, the statement does not affect the conclusion.
Incorrect

Quote:
C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.

The statement provides reason for hiring disciplinary officers since the Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
This statement weakens the conclusion since the conclusion is about NOT hiring more disciplinary officers.
Correct

Quote:
D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.

This statement does not affect the conclusion. It gives a general statement about most ships which does not provide reasons for hiring disciplinary officers. We are not concerned about most ships but about a specific ship the Selene.
Incorrect

Quote:
E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

We are not concerned about other ships in the company fleet. Anyway, the statement provides reasons for not hiring disciplinary officers and strengthens the conclusion.
Incorrect

Conclusion is "It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed"

Correct answer seems D

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.
In a way this will strengthen the argument

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.
Irrelevant

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
Whether it will have corrective effect or not is irrelevant

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
This somewhat weakens the argument because if not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings then there will be very less bureaucratic employees needed to process number of infractions

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
Again irrelevant

The conclusion: The Selene cannot afford to hire three new disciplinary officers as this would increase the number of infractions generated by these officers.

Our objective: Weaken the conclusion

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.
-> This strengthens the conclusion

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.
-> This strengthens the conclusion

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
-> This would imply that fewer infractions would occur, thus decreasing the total cost of infractions. Seems like a good option.

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
-> This does not weaken the conclusion

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
-> This is unrelated to the conclusion

C is the best choice

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.
This is acting as a strengthener. How.? If hiring new officers is not having any effect then what's the point of hiring them.?(extra cost)

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.
This is again acting as a strengthener as its backs the point that hiring them will lead to an increase in infractions hence more cost.

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
So, if this turns out to be true then there won't be any need for infractions as there are no cases to be reported. So hiring new officers is actually helping the cause. Also by weaking the weakness of the program it is indirectly helping the productivity.

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
Even if there are a few disciplinary infractions it still adds up the cost.

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
This is out of the scope of the argument.

Premise:
Quote:
The ship’s operational budget is sufficient to pay the salaries of the new officers, but not the salaries of additional legal and bureaucratic employees needed to process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers.

Conclusion:
Quote:
It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed.

Prethinking:
To weaken the conclusion, we need a statement that says that there's no link between the number of infractions and the need for legal and bureaucratic employees. That way the ship will have enough budget to hire the additional officers without having to worry about legal and bureaucratic employees.

Option Analysis:
Quote:
A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.

This rather strengthens the conclusion. Eliminate A.

Quote:
B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.

Sort of works in our favour, but we can't really justify the 12% increase in legal action. Besides, we don't know what effect will the addition of additional officers have on the Selena. Eliminate B.

Quote:
C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.

Corrective action is not the problem. The problem is that corrective action might cost legal expenses, for which we do not have the budget. So, this option doesn't really help our case either. Eliminate C.

Quote:
D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.

This sort of fits the bill. Let's keep D for now.

Quote:
E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

This one's just out of scope, and kinda strengthens the case against hiring the additional officers. Eliminate E.

Hence, option D is the best of the lot, and it is the answer.

Which of the following, if true, will most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn above?

The answer should be C

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.

This is incorrect as it would strengthen our belief that if discipline is not necessarily improved then it may not be a good idea to hire new officers .

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.

This is incorrect as we do not know the finanicial impact of 12 percent legal action on the total budget of the firm

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.

This is correct as it would show that hiring new officers will have a positive impact on discipline of the crew and may be required to so to reduce infractions

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.

This is incorrect as it has no impact

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

This is incorrect as it is not relevant to the argument at issue

Conclusion - Hiring new officer as proposed will not be productive for the Selene
Premise - Even of Selene is able to pay for the new officers it worn't be able to pay for other employees when the new disciplinary action generates more infractions

Analysing the answer choices

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.
If this is true then there is no point of hiring officer. We can't weaken the conclusion

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.
This is about another vehicle and this majorly strengthens the point more disciplinary officer more infractions

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
This is already established by argument that they need more disciplinary officers hence, incorrect

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
This weaken that if Selene hire more officer it will need more people to discipline as this sates that not every infraction lead to legal proceeding

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
This is irrelevant to the argument

Incorrect. This is out of scope

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
Correct. This shows one of the benefits of increasing the number of disciplinary officers. This is a weakener

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
Incorrect. This is not a weakener. The salaries of additional legal and bureaucratic employees may still be needed to process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers.

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

Argument states :
It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed
also mentioned is that with this new hiring of 3 new DO also required will be additional legal and bureaucratic employees whose job will be process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers.

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates. irrelevant

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action. this option strengthens

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates. ; irrelevant

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
correct option ;

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
not according to argument

OPTION D is correct

Answer D

Conclusion: It will not be productive for the trading vessel Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers

Analyzing the answer choices:

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates. This actually strengthens the argument

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action. Why are we comparing to another trading vessel?

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates. Effect of discipline is irrelevant here

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings. CORRECT

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year. Budget of other ships is irrelevant here

Conclusion : It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers due to the lack of operational budget for additional legal and bureaucratic employees

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.

Provides no information to weaken the argument.

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.

Strengthens the author's argument. Increase in disciplinary officers may lead to increase in legal action.

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.

Weaken's the authors argument. If the discipline among shipmates increases the number of infractions will go down.

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.

Even if not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, some disciplinary infraction may lead to legal proceedings.

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

Out of Scope

To find - Something on the lines that increasing disciplinary officers on board could help productivity

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.
-> Does the opposite

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.
-> Although this supports in weakening, mere percentages would not provide the relative productivity change from the appointment of these officers

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.
-> Correct. This helps to infer that increased discipline would lead to better productivity.

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.
-> Does the opposite

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

Re: 12 Days of Christmas GMAT Competition - Day 12: It will not be product [#permalink]
It will not be productive for the trading vessel the Selene to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed. The ship’s operational budget is sufficient to pay the salaries of the new officers, but not the salaries of additional legal and bureaucratic employees needed to process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers.

Which of the following, if true, will most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn above?

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates. [Strengthens the argument] eliminate

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action. [Case in point but no relevance to this specific ship] eliminate

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates. [keep]

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings. [does not weaken as it doesn't hinge on every infraction, the assumption is that there is an increase in infractions from current] eliminate

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year. [Does not weaken and irrelevant to the current conclusion] eliminate

Hence C is the answer

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.

Out of scope

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.

Does the opposite instead of weakening it

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates.

It means legal action will likely not increase so this is the correct answer

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings.

Out of scope

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.

Not related to the logic

Premise:
1. The ship’s operational budget is sufficient to pay the salaries of the new officers
2. but the operational budget is not sufficient to pay the salaries of additional legal and bureaucratic employees needed to process the increased number of infractions typically generated by new officers

Conclusion:
1. It will not be productive for the trading vessel to hire three new disciplinary officers, as proposed.

Question type: Weaken the conclusion

Pre-thinking: We have to look for new information within the scope of the argument that suggests that by hiring disciplinary officers number of infractions will not increase and hence the cost associated with them.

A. Studies have shown that having more disciplinary officers on board does not necessarily improve discipline among shipmates.....................This is a generic statement that may or may not be valid in the context of the argument. Moreover, it supports the conclusion in a way instead of weakening it. Reject this option.

B. When another trading vessel of the same size as the Selene increased its number of disciplinary officers by twenty percent last year, there were forty-two percent more disciplinary infractions, and of them, twelve percent required legal action.............................Again, this option says that the number of infractions increased in another trading vessel after hiring disciplinary officers. It's not weakening the conclusion. Reject it.

C. The Selene’s crew has reached the size at which an increase in the number of disciplinary officers will have a corrective effect on the discipline among shipmates........................................if it is true then the concern regarding the number of infractions will not be there and hence the concern regarding the increased legal fees. This weakens the conclusion. Keep it.

D. On most ships, not every disciplinary infraction leads to punitive action, and not every punitive action necessitates legal proceedings..........................................We are talking about the overall number of infractions. Not about particular infractions which lead to punitive action. This doesn't weaken the conclusion. Reject it.

E. If the funding needed to expand the crew of the Selene is increased, the budget of other ships in the company’s fleet will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year....................................This is out of scope. It doesn't weaken the conclusion. Reject it.

IMO OA should be option C.
