Background :
I did my Bachelors from the University of Delhi, graduated in 2017, and have been working with a consulting firm ever since. I had envisioned pursuing an MBA back in the final year of college and taken CAT multiple times in the following years, (95.15 being the highest) with VARC being my strongest suit.
2017- My final year of undergrad, and also the year of my first attempt at GMAT. I scored a 640 (Q48 V28). Back then, my primary resources were the Official Guide and classes I had subscribed on Byju's. Though I had practiced a lot of questions, I did not perform all that well. In hindsight, I didn't strategize my practice approach to all too well. I later realized, through some analysis, that I should have focused on my weak points even more (SC being the weakest).
Material used: Official Guide,
Manhattan Books; Free online tests (Veritas,
Manhattan Prep).
2021: I enrolled in Egmat and followed a step-by-step approach to practicing, laying special focus on sentence correction and critical reasoning since these were make or break for me. In each study session, I made it a point to practice 5-6 questions form each topic, trying different approaches for all to see what fits me best. Also, this time around I took out separate time for reading comprehension on the weekends; although I was decent at it, I figured I would practice advanced level sets this time. Here, I summarized each para as I read, and this went a long way.
How did I study?
I used to study for 2-3 hours before work and 1 hour after work. Most importantly I made a schedule and stuck to it.
I followed the process as prescribed by Egmat to build my basics, cementing, ability, etc. For sentence corrections, I used other sources too, especially for modifiers (since the study material on Egmat was too complex). Also, I focused more on verbal this time than on my previous attempts. However, I got complacent in quant as it had been consistently scoring 49-50.
Sept 2021: I scored 710 (V41 Q47)! My score skyrocketed, and this boosted my confidence to a new high. I now knew what works for me and what doesn't. But despite scoring better this time around, I wasn't quite satisfied with my quant score as I strongly felt (from my mock tests) that I could perform better.
Thereafter, I enrolled in Egmat's Last Mile Plan, wherein I worked with my mentor who consistently guided me, in a step-by-step manner.
The ESR analysis also proved to be super useful in helping me identify my weak areas, and on the basis of that I identified 2 areas on which I needed to focus more: Algebra and Number Properties. I was now re-focused on increasing my score, but had utilized all my office leaves, so ultimately had to juggle my work and preparation until the last moment.
In my last attempt, I could stretch my Quant to Q49, but my Verbal decreased as I couldn't manage my time well. I might re-take the GMAT again in the near future, as I see myself scoring a 740, but until then... I wish to share a somewhat "success story" of a 640 to 710.
Hope this helps you in your GMAT journey.
