Total – None = A + B + C – (A and B) – (B and C) – (C and A) + (A and B and C)

40 - 0 = 18 + 20 + 27 - 7 - 12 - (Chess and Carrom) + 4

(Chess and Carrom) = 10

We can n = the number of students who play chess and carrom.

Let’s next use the following equation:

Total = chess + carrom + scrabble - sum of doubles + triple + neither

Since we do not have all the doubles we can represent the sum as n + 7 + 12 = n + 19. So, we have:

40 = 18 + 20 + 27 - (n + 19) + 4 + 0

40 = 50 - n

-10 = -n

10 = n

Ansswer: A

This question can be best solve by Venn Diagram. I am attaching 2 methods to solve the same.

KarishmaB why do we add "A and B and C" but subtract all other combinations ("A and B", "B and C", etc.)? I got this wrong because I subtracted all combinations, including the "all" combination "A and B and C"

There are two formula's for 3 Overlapping Sets,

(i) When we are given people in EXACTLY two sets

Total - Neither = A + B + C - (Sum of people in Exactly two sets) - 2*(People in three)

(ii) When we are provided people in two sets (it isn't mentioned they are a part of ONLY or EXACTLY 2)

Total - Neither = A + B + C - (Sum of people in two sets) + (People in three)

Since this problem falls into the latter category, we use (ii) formula

By adding all the singles we count 3 times the triple section
Then by subtracting all the doubles you remove 3 times the triple section
So you need to add it once back at the end to have it once in total

For all these formulas it's easier to visualise by drawing out a diagram!
