Five women are to be seated around a table, and
then each to five men will be assigned a position
behind a women. In how many ways can couples
thus be arranged, if only the relative order
around the table is importance?

A. 2*5!
B. 5!*5!
C. 4!*5!
D. 4!*4!
E. 10!

We can arrange n people around a circle in (n-1)! ways in circular permutation.

First we have to arrange women so 5 women can be arranged in (5-1)! = 4! ways

Then men are to placed behind their wives so every man can only be seated in 1 way.

Because these 5 men and women represent couples, we have to arrange the 5 couples amongst themselves at last in 5! ways.

Therefore, the resulting arrangement will be in 4!*5! ways.

Option C is the correct answer.

women start in a circular pattern so 4! arrangements for women, now women are fixed and we are given men are to seat behind the women so men's seats are also fixed. so for 5 men we got 5 seats hence 5! arrangements
ans = 4! * 5!

Deconstructing the Question
Five women are seated around a round table.
Then five men are assigned, one behind each woman.
Only the relative order around the table matters (rotations are the same).
We must count the number of possible arrangements.

Step-by-step
Arrange the 5 women around a round table:
\((5-1)! = 4!\)

Once the women are fixed, there are 5 distinct "behind-a-woman" positions.
Assign the 5 men to these 5 positions:
\(5!\)

Total arrangements:
\(4! \cdot 5!\)
