Data Insights (DI) Butler 2023-24 [Question #25, Date: Oct-09-2023] [Click here for Details]

The following table displays data on a Los Angeles department store in 2010.
IN-STORE SALES
ONLINE SALES
ITEMSTATE SHARES (%)STATE RANKSTATE SHARES (%)STATE RANK
Accessories173242
Children's apparel222371
Cosmetics144331
Housewares6453
Jewelry401101
Luggage35164
Men's apparel272372
Shoes521731
Women's apparel461801
(Sort ↕ the table by clicking on the headers)

For each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true based on information in the table. Otherwise, select No.

1) Sorting In-Store sales column's State rank can provide "Yes" as answer.
2) Women's and men's apparel (in instore sales) both have less than 50% market share in state sales. Hence, its is falls to say that combined share will be greater than 50%
3)There are no data points in table which can help us to reach actual sales value. Hence, "no" is answer.

I don't get how #1 is a 'Yes'. If we're looking at it purely factually, the store has the #1 rank in five departments in online sales. So to say it has 3 is not correct. Wording needs to be improved IMO.

Official Explanation

Statement 1: In jewelry, shoes, and women’s apparel, the store ranks first in the state in both online and in-store sales.

Statement 2: The store has 27% of the sales in men’s apparel and 46% of the sales in women’s apparel, but without knowing the total sales figures for the state in both of those departments, it is impossible to determine exactly what percentage the store has of the total sales in both. However, since the store has less than half of the total sales in each, it definitely cannot have more than half of the total sales in both.

Statement 3: The store has a bigger share of the total sales in the state for online sales than for in-store sales, but without knowing the total number of both kinds of sales, it is impossible to determine whether the store actually made more sales online.

Ans: Yes, No, and No
HI Sajjad1994 for question no. 3:
so if it can not be determined, the question says:
select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true based on information in the table. Otherwise, select No.
But here we need additional data, and we can't say yes or no, it has both possibilities. Should we assume No - same as can not be determined for official questions as well?

Reading carefully, statement says in BOTH in store and online , it is in top 3. Given the table, we can verify this and say yes it is correct.

Here we need "numbers of sales" to determine which sales whether online or instore are more than the other. We cannot answer based on the information available.

Should we assume No - same as can not be determined for official questions as well?

It depends on the context of the question statement. We cannot warranty the similarity without the statement.
