OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The two main factors determining the climate of a region are its latitude and altitude. The three cities of Jubilee, Joy and Jest are all on the same latitude and are spread over only 100 miles on this line. However, the difference in temperature throughout most of the year between Jubilee and Jest on one side and Joy on the other is more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which of the following, if true, would most contribute to an explanation of the facts above?

(A) It is much harder to get to Joy by car than it is to get to Jubilee and Jest.

Incorrect.

This is a Paradox question, so it is made up of premises only; you need to find a new premise which best resolves the apparent discrepancy between the existing premises:

Premise A: the climate of a place is affected by latitude (north-south) and altitude (height)

Premise B: Jubilee, Joy and Jest are cities on the same latitude (horizontal line around the globe).

Premise C: It's much colder or warmer in Joy than it is in Jubilee and Jest throughout most of the year.

    Resolving Premise: ?

The fact that it's easier to get to one place than to another doesn't resolve the paradox of why relatively close by cities have dramatically different climates.

(B) While the city of Joy is quite a tourist attraction, only 0.5% of the revenue made in the cities of Jubilee and Jest comes from the tourism industry.

The fact that many more tourists go to Joy than to Jubilee or Jest doesn't, on its own, resolve the paradox of why relatively close cities have dramatically different climates. What makes Joy special?

(C) During most of the year short clothes are worn in the city of Joy, while in Jubilee and in Jest warmer clothes are usually needed.

Incorrect.

While this answer choice helps identify Joy as having a warmer climate, it does not help us resolve the paradox. The fact that people need to dress differently in Joy is derived from the paradox of the extreme difference in temperature. What makes Joy special?

(D) While the city of Joy is situated high in the mountains, Jubilee and Jest are located not more than 200 feet above sea level.

If the three cities share the same latitude, it must be their different altitude that creates their climate differences.

(E) Whereas Joy is populated mostly by affluent people, Jubilee and Jest are home to many people of lower socio-economic status.

Incorrect.

The socio-economic status of the citizens has no effect on a region's climate and therefore cannot explain the paradox at hand.

In this question, having bit of knowledge of the meaning of latitude and longitude would be helpful. The knowledge would help us see the contradiction of 'same latitude but different temperature'

Answer is D ,and other choices don't address the contradiction
