Felipe has concluded that:
  • his first preference is Room 1, second is Room 6, and third is Room 2
I think the third preference should be Room 3 instead of Room 2. Though it was not required in the question but still it defies "preference" logic used.

Normally, I would go for what you have told. But since the preference is room 2 over room 3, and we are to find a logic for that preference, my take would be -

What can we say about the strength of people attending?
It would surely be more than 8 and at the most 12 ( reason why room 1 is first preference).

Preferences : He surely would prefer a VC and Projector, and 2 and 3 have the same status.

Difference :
1. The difference is room 2 has 12 and room 3 has a max capacity of 20. Now, we know he expects at the most 12, so would a room with larger capacity than what is required preferable. If there is no Video Conferencing, he may want the best possible use of tele conferencing and smaller room may be a better choice.
2. Availabilty of room 2 on a later day. It is mentioned that he prefers the conference earlier in the week. Note he is not looking for the earliest in week. Maybe both Tuesday and Wednesday would fit in when we speak of earlier in the week.

We are looking at if the option is able to justify certain details of the table. You have to assume the information to be true and see if it helps in explaining at least one of Felipe's conclusions.

So, if he is planning to host at least 10 persons, then he discarding rooms with max occupancy of 8 people is justified.

You are mistaking it with finding whether the option can be derived from the table.

For all those who think the third option is 'no', because the least number could be 9 as well, let me break it down for you. I made the mistake too.
Look at the last statement - a.k.a the main question:

'Based on the information provided, for each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement would, if true, help explain at least one of Felipe's conclusions. Otherwise, select No'

So you have to first assume that the statement 3 is True. And then you look at the table. Even if the statement was at least 9, 11 or 12 people, the statement would still explain his reason to not select an 8-person room.

Hence, the answer is 'yes'

WOuld help quesitons are resolve CR type quesitons.

If any statement explains the conclusion or in this case the preferences then the statement helps.

WIth this theory, one can complete this quesiton in time constraint.

Felipe is organizing a meeting that several staff will attend at the office and several others will attend remotely via teleconference. He would prefer to schedule the meeting earlier in the week, but needs to consider other factors as well. The table lists all of the available rooms and all of the features Felipe needs to consider in choosing a room. All of the available rooms at the office are equipped for voice-only teleconferencing, but only some are equipped for video conferencing. Based on the available information, Felipe has concluded that:
  • his first preference is Room 1, second is Room 6, and third is Room 2
  • he cannot use Rooms 4 and 5

Based on the information provided, for each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement would, if true, help explain at least one of Felipe's conclusions. Otherwise, select No

There is no contradiction.

Statement 1 says Felipe prefers video conferencing enough to schedule later for it, for example, Thursday in Room 1 or Friday in Room 6 instead of Wednesday in Room 2, which does not have video conferencing. It does not say video conferencing is required.

Statement 2 is also true because Room 2, his third choice, does not have video conferencing. So he prefers video, but is still willing to use a room without it.

For question 3 - Can it also not be that room 4 is rejected because projector is mandatory while room 5 and room 3 both are not selected because Tuesday is not acceptable ?

Yes, those could be alternative explanations, but that does not affect statement 3. The question asks whether the statement, if true, would help explain at least one of Felipe’s conclusions, not whether it is the only possible explanation.

If at least 10 people attend, Rooms 4 and 5, which hold only 8 people each, cannot be used. Therefore, statement 3 is Yes.

Hi suntprovident,

Good instinct to look for other stories that fit, but notice what the prompt is actually asking. It says: select Yes if the statement would, if true, help explain at least one of Felipe's conclusions. It never asks you to find the only reason.

So your alternative - no projector kills Room 4, Tuesday kills Rooms 5 and 3 - can absolutely be a valid separate story. That's fine. It just doesn't cancel out Statement 3.

Why Statement 3 is still Yes: Assume it's true that at least 10 people attend at the office. Now look at the occupancy column:

- Room 4 - max 8
- Room 5 - max 8

Both are below 10, so both are ruled out. That single assumption fully accounts for the conclusion "he cannot use Rooms 4 and 5." Once a statement explains at least one conclusion, it earns a Yes - even if some other condition could also explain it.

The existence of a rival explanation doesn't weaken this one; "could help explain" is not "must be the unique cause."

One small note on your version: Tuesday being unacceptable would also knock out Room 3, but Room 3 is not in Felipe's list of unusable rooms - his stated conclusions are only about Rooms 4 and 5. So your story actually explains more than the conclusions claim, while Statement 3 lands exactly on them.

Quick way to lock the logic in: think of a case where two clues both fit.

A room is rejected. Clue A: "it has no windows." Clue B: "it seats fewer than 10." If the room truly has no windows and truly seats 8, both clues explain the rejection. Being asked "does Clue B help explain it?" - the answer is Yes, regardless of Clue A.

Same here: your projector/Tuesday idea and the ≥10 idea can coexist, and Statement 3 stays a Yes.

Answer: Yes
