Given: State X has 77 acres designated as wilderness, which is 0.0003 percent of its total acreage.
Asked: Which of the following expresses the total acreage of State X?

The total acreage of State X = \(\frac{77}{.0003%} = \frac{7700}{.0003} = \frac{77000000}{3} = \frac{10^6*77}{3}\)

State X has 77 acres designated as wilderness, which is 0.0003 percent of its total acreage. Which of the following expresses the total acreage of State X?

A. \(3(10^4)(77)\)

B. \(3(10^6)(77)\)

C. \(\frac{(10^2)(77)}{3}\)

D. \(\frac{(10^4)(77)}{3}\)

E. \(\frac{(10^6)(77)}{3}\)

Source: GMAT Focus Prep
Wilderness = (0.00003/100)*Total Acerage
i.e. Total Acerage = Wilderness * 1000/0.0003 = \(77*10^2/(3*10^{-4}) = 77*10^6/3\)

You always want to turn a sentence into an equation if possible. The big trap here, though, is that 0.0003 "percent" means you add two more decimals spaces to .0003, i.e the number is actually .000003, which is 3/1,000,000 which is 3/10^6

Let the total acreage be x. Our equation is

77 = (3/10^6)x

multiply both sides by 10^6

77(10^6) = 3x

x = 77(10^6)/3
