Hi shiv23
I hope you are doing well. Speaking about your profile, you've got a strong foundation with a decent GMAT and a stellar academic record. While retaking the GMAT might be ideal, your current score is competitive for many schools.

You should target schools with strong sports programs and generous scholarships like UMass Amherst, USC Marshall, and McDonough at Georgetown. They're known for their sports focus and financial aid.
Since you can't retake the GMAT before deadlines, focus on what makes you stand out. Being sent to the Olympics for work is incredible. Craft a compelling narrative around your sports media experience and leadership qualities.

While you're open to consulting, showcase your passion for sports business. Frame the MBA as a way to develop the business acumen to transition from media to the strategic side of the sports industry.
Don't wait to apply! Early applications are key, especially for scholarships.

Hi shiv23,

Thank you for asking for the recommendation.

I have created a detailed post to help candidates select schools to apply to. You can find the same here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/mba-master-guide-how-to-choose-schools-427776.html

However, after reading your post, I have a few suggestions:
  1. If you are happy with your GMAT scores, you can proceed with the same. But if you are looking for a full scholarship, you might need to consider rewriting the exam. Higher the GMAT scores, higher are the chances of getting a scholarship. Also, please note that scholarships are awarded based on a mix of various factors- GMAT scores, demonstrated leadership skills, etc. Therefore, your essays need to take care of these aspects.
  2.  You need to have a very clear post-MBA career goal that connects with your previous experiece. An MBA degree does not equip you with completely new skillset. It builds upon your existing skills. Therefore, if you say that you want to go to consulting, you need to connect it with your current skillset and how your work experience so far will help you get into consulting. After all, these business schools want everyone to get a job where they want, and if the adcoms are not convinced that they can place you where you want to go, they would not risk offering an admit to you.
  3. Start networking! Connect with people from various schools and understand how those schools can help you get where you want to.
  4. As you will be attending the Olympics and will be busy there, I would recommend you to apply in R2.
If you have any specific question, feel free to let me know.

Hi,

Need some advice on schools to consider for my MBA.

Brief background: got a 645 in my GMAT (Q83, V81, DI81) and my Indian CGPA is 8.57 (haven't converted to a US 4.0 scale) - where I held the number one rank in my class throughout college.

I studied sports management at an undergraduate level and will have ~5 years experience in sports media at matriculation having worked at the leading sports broadcaster and media house in India.

I could give my GMAT FE again - but I'm off to the Olympics for a month and won't be able to get back to normal life before 20th August - which leaves no time to work on round 1 applications if I was to give GMAT again - so, for now, have decided to stick with my current score.

Although I have yet to receive an official promotion at work - I have led projects and been one of the top-performing members among my peers - which has been one of the reasons why I have chosen to go to Paris to cover the Olympics.

Regarding my post-MBA goals - I want to get into consulting - but I am open to staying in the sports business space and working for teams/organisations in the NBA/NFL and sports media. I also feel like I would have a better chance of getting into an MBA school if I leaned on my sports background and said I want to use the program to develop my business skills after working in media for so long so that I can work on the strategy/business side of the sports business.

One final point - I don't want to take on debt and I will probably only do my MBA if I get substantial financial aid - so want to only target schools that have the highest chances of giving a full-ride or a substantial scholarship for my profile.

Are there any schools that fit this criteria or would it be wise to work on aspects of my application before looking to apply?

Hi. Very unique profile for an Indian candidate. You did not mention your "functional responsibility" in the broadcasting network. That would help us understand how you can connect your skills with your post-MBA plans in consulting. Regarding the GMAT focus, it's a bummer you won't have time to retake it. The B-schools take GMAT performance (among other factors) as a basis for deciding how much scholarship you deserve. If you are eyeing more competitive schools (read feeder schools for consulting), the schools would be less inclined to award financial aid for less-than-average scores.Where do you see yourself living in the long term—EU or the US (or back in the subcontinent or the ME)? That should help you shortlist the schools. On the legacy edition of the GMAT, good B-schools considered the Q49 or the 75th percentile borderline elite for Indian candidates. A low percentile on the verbal section is perceived to reflect on the candidate's communication abilities in an international classroom setup (given your experience in broadcasting this should not concern you). To put it simply, the schools will want to see that you still have a solid quant foundation to be able to sail through the highly analytical finance and stats courses. Think about how you can convince the schools regarding this. If you havent already, start reaching out to the school adcoms, alumni and potential recruiters to gather fodder for your arguments. Showing the schools you have employers lined up for you will get you sure shot admits.

If you are interested in US schools, I would suggest looking at the Top 15(throw in some diversity focused schools like Haas, Duke, Tuck ) . In the EU/UK, you can consider INSEAD, LBS, HEC Paris, IESE (Oxford as well). You should cast a wide net so you can use some admits to negotiate with higher ranked schools.

Reach out for further advise

Best wishes

Thank you so much for your response, really appreciate it.

I am not happy with my score and believe I have a higher result in me considering my practise test scores included a 655, 675, and a 685. I assumed that applying in R1 would probably be more beneficial than applying with a 655-665 range score. But I assume you are saying that's not the case?

Also regarding my goals - my true post-MBA goals is to make a career pivot into consulting - however from what I've read and spoken to people - I may have a higher chance of getting in if I opt not to advertise this pivot and instead focus on my story of using an MBA to leverage my experience in sports media and management to work in the  business side of the sports industry.
