“Regardless of how the H-1B ‘$100K rule’ ultimately lands, the current uncertainty is a drag on hiring. Departments finalize growth rates, resource plans, and budget requests ahead of the fiscal year. If the policy landscape is volatile, leadership delays headcount decisions and recruiting activity slows unless it is critical resources

Either way I heard once you get admit you can negotiate with Adcom on scholarship .. not sure how true it’s .. but try hard on every scholarship out there

Unlike H1B , scrapping OPT is tough as it need to be passed in Congress and senate

Especially need 60 votes in Senate, right now republicans have 53 if I’m right

But there some rumors to make opt expensive or make approval harder

They can simply delay the extension grant after 1 year and STEM OPT gone

The president especially current one has almost complete unchecked powers on most issues especially this one

That’s because for first republicans politicians believe if they go against Trump
It’s hard for them to get re-elected

That made him invisible and hard control over GoP

Transfers from OPT to H1B are going to be very limited because of the new fee. This announcement of $100K is a fundamental shift in policy that unfortunately impacts all F1 students. This is my personal read and not a legal opinion. Fingers crossed that the things change
Amazon will spend 3 years paying 165k excluding signing bonus to pathwayd hire then just send them back wasting 3 years of training rather then pay 100kM

That's like wasting 450k for 3 years just to save 100k or 200k assuming two h-1 tries

Also I heard that the H1B visa fee that the companies is usually deducted from the candidate's salary. Is that true?
By law/regulation the company has to pay for it. Candidates is not supposed to cover it. And all large companies that hire internationals cover the costs of lawyers and fees.

In smaller companies where they may not be familiar with the process or may be reluctant to sponsor, candidates often tell they’ll take care of everything and their boss just has to sign....

Nothing gets deducted from your salary however. It’s a one time payment and it’s basically a couple thousand for the government filing fees and 3-5k for the lawyers submitting the application. That’s pretty-100k prices by the way.

Fragomen is one law firm specializing in H1Bs that quite a few large companies use to file petitions. 40k per year. BAL is the second one. 20k. Pretty big dominant players leverage by Amazon and other tech Giants. They make the HR department work easy.

Love the strategy.

I think it’s tough for small companies to sponsor but maybe I’m mistaken...

You are assuming that Amazon has no choices but to hire H1B workers. It’s been a while since I took the GMAT but I do remember Bayes Theorem

- probability of letting go of someone on the condition that they are already hired and trained for a mere $100k = Low
- probability of hiring someone - on the condition that they are not trained yet and you can hire American (AND there is a chance that even OPT is reduced to 1 YR) = close to 0.

Future OPT folks belong to the second case. Again, I would love for this not to be the case but that’s how it is
Yes I was referring more to those already on OPT and hired amazon would probably pay the fee everytime even if it takes 2 3 tries for candidates given lottery still there just probably more complex now with these wage based rules. But for new hires, probably not. No clarity though from the MBB side yet, though they probably would think along similar lines

If in a job interview one(opt guy) says that I don't want sponsorship in future and really doesn't want it (plans to come back to India after stem opt ends). Considering the present scenario what are the chances that the companies will hire an opt guy?
