That rule is applicable for work done before undergrad
Mostly any work done before that will only count as part time / internship with very few exceptions

Also your masters was distance learning , hence it should not affect your overall work experience

Hello

I have accumulated four years of professional work experience since completing my undergraduate degree, while also being actively engaged in the social sector for the past eight years. In addition, I recently completed an MA in Sociology through distance learning, which I pursued alongside my full-time job.

To clarify, because my MA was undertaken in distance mode concurrently with my employment, my total recognized professional work experience remains four years. The pursuit of a distance education degree does not affect the calculation of my full-time work experience—this is important as I prepare my MBA application.

Could any one please advise how business schools typically view an MA degree earned via distance education, especially when it is completed alongside full-time work?

Hi, thanks for sharing your query.

Usually, business schools want an applicant to only pursue one thing at a time. So, you’re either working full-time or you are studying, whether it’s distance, whether it’s online, etc., but full-time. If you’re doing a part-time degree, then yes, schools would want to know whether it is in, are you attending classes over the weekend—but if this is a distance degree, then what I recommend is to put your full-time experience instead of the distance degree, because otherwise the school will only consider the distance degree and not work experience.

And work experience is much more valuable to an MBA than completing a distance second degree, right? So, if you did your undergraduate full-time degree, that would be perfectly fine. And since, you know, your MA in sociology might or might not be valuable at all to the MBA program, it’s okay to leave it out. But if you’re looking for a more customized and detailed evaluation, do write to us for a free profile evaluation.
