Is GMAT only question adaptive or both question and section adaptive?
I just realized that we don't yet have a session that would neatly accommodate general questions like these.
Narenn, should we consider adding a general session on things like scoring, why scores get canceled, choosing section orders, choosing whether to take the test online vs. test centers, and so on...?
Muralidharan2812, this is a more nuanced question that it might seem. From a practical standpoint, I would recommend thinking of the test as strictly question-adaptive, since that's arguably the most important characteristic of the scoring algorithm.
Technically speaking, there is a small "carryover" effect from one section to the next. The GMAT adaptive algorithm's job is to choose questions efficiently, targeted to your ability level. Since section scores are moderately correlated (for example, high scorers on quant are somewhat more likely to score well on DI and verbal, too), the difficulty level of the first question of each section (besides the first section, obviously) is affected by your performance on the previous section(s).
To be clear: this is a very, very small thing that doesn't ultimately influence your overall score significantly. It just helps the test run more efficiently.
The bottom line: yes, the test has a very small "carryover" from one section to the next, but I wouldn't worry about that at all as a test-taker -- the effect is too small to worry about, and I wouldn't even let it influence your choice of section order. So you can think of the test as question-level adaptive, and leave it at that.
I hope that helps a bit!
