amount of almonds in the mixture: 6x -> cost A
amount of pistachios in the mixture: 5x -> -> cost P=A-11
total amount in the mixture: 11x

cost + 25% * cost = 25
125% * cost = 25
cost = 25 * 100/125 = 20

(6x*A + 5x*(A-11))/11x = 20
(11x*A - 55x)/11x = 20
A - 5 = 20
A = 25

The answer is C

cost is 20$ per pound

6(x+11) + 5(x)
divide by 11
x=14

then 14+ 11
25

Bunuel
A shopkeeper at a movie theater concession stand mixes almonds and pistachios in a ratio of 6:5 by weight. The mixture is then sold at $25 per pound, earning a 25% profit. If the cost of almonds for the shopkeeper is $11 more per pound than the cost of pistachios, what is the cost price of almonds per pound?

A. $14
B. $20
C. $25
D. $26
E. $29

Answer (C)

Given: A : P = 6 : 5
cost of almond is 11$ more than Pistachios.
The mixture is sold for 25$ at 25% profit. From this we know that cost = 20$ (since cost*profit=sale price)
let the cost of Pistachios be P, the cost of almonds is P+11$
Eq- 6(P+11)+5P=11(20)
From tthis we know P=14 and therefore cost of almonds = 14+11=25$

((6 x (price of almonds) + 5 x (price of pistachios)) / 11 ) x (1 + 25/100) = 25

6 x (price of almonds) + 5 x (price of pistachios) = 25 x 100/125 x 11

6 x (price of pistachios + 11) + 5 x (price of pistachios) = 20 x 11

11 x (price of pistachios) + 66 = 20 x 11

(price of pistachios) = 20 - 6 = 14

(price of almonds) = (price of pistachios) + 11 = 14+11 = 25

The correct answer is C

Let, the cost price of pistachios be $ x/lb

Therefore, almonds = $(x+11)/lb

Average cost per pound = [6(x+11) + 5(x)] / (6 + 5) which gives us x+6

$25/lb at 25% profit means the original cost per pound would be $20

Therefore, x+6 = 20, that means x = 14

Therefore, cost price of almonds = x+11 = 14+11 = $25

Answer Choice: C

25% profit on the selling price equals 125% of the cost price. 125/100 simplifies to 5/4 x cost price. Therefore it's reciprocal would be 4/5 x selling price $25 which results to $20 weighted average cost.

$20 would be the price if almonds and pistachios cost the same, but since they don't then we adjust individual prices accordingly based on the 6:5 ratio. As a weighted average lies between the component prices, the individual prices must be placed above and below. Since almonds make up the larger share of the mixture (6 vs 5), assign them the larger subtraction: 20 - 6 = 14 and therefore pistachios: 20 + 5 = 25

I picked numbers but it took me way too long.

Assume weight of mixture is 11 lbs total. So the total mixture will have 6 lbs of almonds and 5 lbs of pistachios.
At $11lbs, total revenue will be $275.
Starting with B:
If cost price of almonds is $20/lb, pistachios are $9/lb.
20*6+9*5=120+45= $165 (total cost).

Is 165*1.25 = 275? No.

Move onto C.

25*6+14*5=150+70=220.

220*1.25=275? Yes. Choice C.

I struggled here with the algebra but based on other's solutions it would have been more simple to write the equation
Cost of almonds / lb = a
Cost of pistachios / lb = p
a = 11+p

6(11+p) + 5p = 20.

This equation, broken down, is Quantity 1 * Cost 1 + Quantity 2 * Cost 2 = Total Cost.
6 is the weight, or ratio, or quantity of part of the mixture. We get 20 from $25 per pound yielding a profit of 25%, from the equation 25=1.25C, where C is the cost of each pound of mixture.

Given the SP of mixture is 25 which is sold at 25% profit. Hence CP = 20
Now taking a total volume of 11 pounds 6 almond and 5 pistachio
And taking price of almond as 'a' and pistachio as 'a-11'
total cost: 6a + 5(a-11) = 20 x 11
resolving we get a = 25 (Option C)
