We know that,
Mileage per gallon = 14 miles

Van's fuel tank capacity = 5120 ounces = 5120/128 = 40 gallons
Total mileage with a full fuel tank = 40*14 = 560 miles

After new fuel saving system installation, 70% fuel is required for previous distance
=> New milage = 14/0.7 = 20mil/gallon

New total mileage with a full fuel tank = 40*20 = 800 miles

Therefore,
Additional mileage = 800 - 560 = 240 miles

Converting ounces to gallons,
5120/128 = 40 gallons
The fuel tank holds 40 gallons
Original mileage - 14 miles per gallon
New mileage after system installation = 14/0.7 = 20 miles per gallon

New distance covered = 20*40

x gallons ---> 14 miles ---- (1)

0.7x gallons ---> 14 miles (it travels the same distance)

OR

x gallons ---> 20 miles (14/0.7 miles) ----- (2)

Total fuel tank capacity -- 5120 ounce or 40 gallons (1g=128 ounce gives us 1/128 gallon=1 ounce, which means (1/128)*5120 gallon= 5120 ounce, 40 gallon=5120 ounce)

Question is asking how many more miles?

Before fuel saving system-

Using eqn (1)-

Full fuel tank of 40 gallon will give 14 miles per gallons = 40*14=560 miles

After fuel saving system-

Using eqn (2)

The question get's quite simple if figure out how much has the mileage changed and what is the capacity of the fuel tank.

For the first question, change in mileage:

Mileage currently:

14 Mile == 1 gallons
1 Mile == 1/14 gallons

Now, only 70% of fuel is used for same distance

For the new fuel system:

1 Mile = 1/14 * 0.7 = 1/14 * 7/10 = 1/20
20 Miles = 1 gallon.

Change in mileage = (20 - 14) = 6 miles per gallon.

For the second question, size of tank:

Distance travelled by a car with full tank = Amount of fuel it holds * Mileage

for the old tank = (Amount of fuel * Old Mileage)
for the new tank = (Amount of fuel * New Mileage)

What the question wishes to answer? -> How many more miles can the van travel on a full tank -> Distance covered by with old fuel system - Distance covered by new fuel system

= (Amount of fuel) * (New Mileage - Old Mileage)
= 5120/128 * (20 - 14) -> converting ounces to gallons 1 gallon == 128 ounces, hence, 5120/128 = current fuel capacity in gallons)
= 40 * 6
= 240

let consider r1= mileage before fuel saving system
r2 = mileage after fuel saving system

r1=14mpg
r2= \(14*10/7\) (fuel consumption and efficiency are reciprocals)
= 20mpg

Now the tank capacity = 5120/128 = 40g

old distance= \(14*40\)=560miles
New distance =\( 20*40\) = 800miles
difference= 240miles

First of all, let us calculate capacity of fuel tank 512 0÷1 28 equal to 40 gallon
Before installation of system, distance travelled is equal to 14 into 40 equal to 560 miles
After installation installation, 70% of the fuel is used for same distance.
The new mileage become 14*[ 10÷7 ]equal to 20 miles per gallon
New distance on full tank is 800 miles
So 800-560 equal to 240 is the extra miles covered
Option C is correct

He can travel 14 miles in 1 gallon.

1 gallon is 128 ounces so 5120 ounces will be 40 gallons = total capacity of the tank

therefore initially the person can travel 14 miles per gallon * 40 gallons = 560 miles

Now the usage is 14 miles in 0.7 gallon (since capacity reduces to 70%)
therefore, 40*14/ 0.7 = 800 miles

Difference is 240 miles - answer is C

How many MORE miles, the question was asking the increase, not the new mileage. After calculating 800 i had to compare to existing. I stopped at 800 and got the answer wrong
