GMAT Club Official Solution:

A delivery van has a mileage of 14 miles per gallon. After a fuel-saving system is installed, the van will use only 70% as much fuel as it used before to travel the same distance. If the van’s fuel tank holds 5,120 ounces of fuel, how many more miles can the van travel on a full tank after the system is installed? (1 gallon = 128 ounces)

A. 168
B. 224
C. 240
D. 560
E. 800

The tank holds:

5,120/128 = 40 gallons

Before the system is installed, the van can travel:

14 * 40 = 560 miles

After the system is installed, the van uses only 70% as much fuel as before to travel the same distance. So with the same amount of fuel, it can travel:

1/0.70 = 10/7

times as far as before.

After the system is installed, the van can travel:

560 * 10/7 = 800 miles

So the increase is:

800 - 560 = 240 miles

Answer: C.

Current Mileage of Van = 14 miles per gallon
After fuel saving aystem is installed, new mileage = 14 miles per 0.70 gallon

128 ounces=1 gallon
5120 ounces =5120/128 =40 gallon

Current distance travelled on full tank = 14*40=560 miles
After fuel saving system installed, distance travelled= (14/0.70)*40=800 miles

Difference = 800-560=240 miles

total capacity of the tank= 5120 ounces which is 5120/128= 40 gallons

The van covers 14 miles on 1 gallon of fuel. total distance travelled for 40 gallons
= 14x40= 560 miles.

After installing the fuel system, the van will now use 70% of the fuel that it used to use before.
So new mileage= 14 X 10/7 = 20 miles/ gallon

With 40 gallon and 20 miles/gallon, the new covered distance will be 20 x 40= 800 miles.

Extra distance travelled= 800-560 =240

Firstly, let convert 5120 ounces to gallons. That is 5120/128 = 40 gallons

Originally, the van travelled
14 miles ==> 1 gallon of gas

However, after the system was installed, it only took 70% of the fuel i.e. the van travelled
14 miles ==> 0.7 gallon of gas

Thus, let it travel x miles in 40 gallons.

Therefore, x = 14X40/0.7 = 800 miles

Answer is (E) 800 miles

The tank holds $5120$ ounces.
Since $1$ gallon = $128$ ounces, we can convert the total capacity:
$\frac{5120}{128} = 40$ gallons.

Before the system is installed, the van travels $14$ miles per $1$ gallon.
Total original distance = $40 \times 14 = 560$ miles.

After the fuel-saving system is installed, the van travels the same $14$ miles using only $0.7$ gallons (which is $70%$ of $1$ gallon).
Total new distance = $40 \times \frac{14}{0.7} = 40 \times 20 = 800$ miles.

Hence, increase in the distance after installing the system $800 - 560 = 240$ miles.

The tank holds 5,120 ounces and 1 gallon = 128 ounces

Tank capacity in gallons = 5,120/128 = 40 gallons

With a mileage of 14 miles per gallon and a full 40 gallon tank -
Original distance = 40 * 14 = 560 miles

But system uses only 70% as much fuel to travel the same distance. So there will be extra fuel remaining that will take van even further, so

New distance = Original distance/0.7 = 560/0.7 = 800 miles

So, the extra miles that can be traveled further = 800 - 560 = 240 miles, so C is our answer

Given mileage = 14 miles / gallon, after installation of efficiency equipment, vehicles uses only 70% as much fuel, earlier 1 gallon = 14 miles, now 0.7 gallons = 14 miles, solving = 20 miles / gallon. 1 gallon = 128 ounces. 5120 gallons = 5120/128 = 40 gallons. So increase in miles travelled = 20*40-14*40 = 240.

thus 5120 ounces = [5120][/128] = 40 gallon.
previously 1 gallon = 14 miles
Now 0.7 gallon = 14 miles, since it takes 70% of fuel to cover the same distance.

answer is C.

As 128 ounces is 1 gallon, 5120 ounces of fuel equals 40 gallons. Now with the new system in place, we only need to use 70% of the fuel to cover the same distance. This means, if earlier we were able to travel 14 miles with 1 gallon of fuel, we will now be able to travel 20 miles with 1 gallon of fuel. Hence, with 40 gallons, if earlier we would have covered 560 miles, now we can cover 800 miles. This is 240 miles higher.

First convert ounces to gallons
5120 ounces= 40 gallons
Total miles covered in 40 gallons= 560
Since 70% fuel is saved
so 70% of 40 gallons = 28 gallons
Now using unigtary method-
28 gallons--> 560 miles
1 gallon--> 20 miles
If tank can hold 40 gallons
then total miles = 800 miles
How many more?
800-560 = 240 MILES! So, C is answer.

Milage before Fuel saving system = 14 m/g. Total fuel = 5120/128 = 40 gallons
Now, after fuel system it will only use 70 percent that would be 40x70/100 = 28 gallons
so now milage after fuel system = 14 x 40 / 28 = 20 m/g
difference is of 6 m/g so the total improvement in miles would be 6 x 40 = 240.

van runs 14 miles/gallon
since we have 5120 ounces fuel, it will be 5120/128 = 40 gallons
total miles covered in 40 gallons = 14 * 40 = 560 miles

After, improvement it takes 70% of fuel to travel same distance. It means it will now take 0.7 gallon for 14 miles.
So, in 40 gallons, it will cover = (40 * 14/0.7) = 800 miles
