First, determine whether these are truly careless mistakes or whether they reveal a deeper issue. If you immediately recognize the correct approach when you reread the question, the problem is probably your process. If you still do not know how to solve the question, then the issue is more likely conceptual.
Also, 90 percent accuracy means different things at different difficulty levels. It could be excellent on hard questions but insufficient on easy questions. Track your accuracy separately by topic, difficulty, section, and whether the practice was timed or untimed. One overall percentage can hide the real pattern.
Careless mistakes usually are not random. They tend to fall into recurring categories:
1. Missing a qualifier such as only, except, unless, must, could, positive, distinct, at least, at most, or exactly
2. Answering with a percentage when the question asks for a number, or vice versa
3. Confusing a percentage change with a percentage-point change
4. Overlooking a unit, sign, restriction, time period, or reference group
5. Solving for one quantity when the question asks for another
6. Misreading a sentence, table, graph, or answer choice
7. Performing the work correctly but selecting the wrong choice
8. Rushing because too much time was spent on an earlier question
Create a separate
error log for these process mistakes. For each one, record:
1. The exact word, phrase, unit, or condition you missed
2. What you mistakenly thought the question said
3. How that misreading changed your solution
4. The specific safeguard that would have prevented the error
Simply writing “careless mistake” is not enough. That label describes the outcome but does not identify the cause or the solution.
Build a consistent reading process. Before solving, pause briefly and restate what the question is asking in your own words. For Quant and DI, identify the required answer form: a number, percentage, ratio, range, rate, or statement. For Verbal, identify the exact task and make sure you are answering that task rather than a related one.
Pay particular attention to words that materially change the problem, but do not try to underline or mentally emphasize everything. Excessive highlighting can create another source of distraction. Focus on decision-changing language.
Before submitting an answer, perform a short, targeted check:
1. Did I answer the exact question asked?
2. Is my answer in the correct form and unit?
3. Did I account for every important qualifier and restriction?
4. Did I choose the answer that matches my result?
Do not completely re-solve every question. That will consume too much time and may cause you to change correct answers. Your final check should target the specific types of mistakes you know you tend to make.
Practice this process in small, untimed sets until it becomes automatic. You can also use accuracy streaks rather than relying solely on averages. For example, aim for 15 easy questions, 15 medium questions, or 10 hard questions correct in a row. Any missed question restarts the streak. Then analyze the miss and complete new questions that test the same skill or process.
Once you can maintain high accuracy without time pressure, gradually introduce timing. Do not jump immediately from careful untimed work to full-speed timed sections. First use small timed sets, then longer mixed sets, and finally full sections. If your careless errors appear primarily near the end of longer sets, fatigue or pacing is probably contributing to the problem.
It can also help to compare the first half of a practice session with the second half. If your accuracy falls later, you may be losing concentration, rushing, or becoming mentally fatigued. In that case, you need to practice maintaining your process during longer sessions, not just while you are fresh.
Most importantly, stop dismissing these as “silly mistakes.” If the same errors keep recurring, they are process weaknesses. The good news is that process weaknesses are highly fixable when you identify the pattern, create a specific safeguard, and practice that safeguard until it becomes habitual. The goal is not merely to know how to solve the question. The goal is to execute accurately and reliably every time.
