Oi... I received an interview invite just now... damn internet took 20 mins to get to the status check page... I thought it was a ding and my heart stopped beating for 5 mins while the page loaded x-( can't CBS just be nice and write an email .... x-( I'm pretty happy though... a good friend already got in, I hope I'll share the same luck

Evl, did you write an optional essay? I did not, but CBS takes in additional material and am wondering if I should write another love letter on why CBS is my first choice. It is not my first choice and that is why I hesitated for so long, but with an impending W ding later today, I think I should write to CBS. what do you think?

Just got my status change email!

Anyway, ujjib, I didn't do an optional essay. My plan is to visit CBS in a couple of weeks (I have a friend's wedding in NYC), and write an additional letter after that.

I don't think the optional essay should be about "Why X School?"
It should be about addressing "unclear" portion of your app, or something very personal that would help adcom make better decision.

maybe i could have done it differently, but i used the optional essay to address any potential weak spots in my application. i used the other essays to be clear in illustrating my goals and how school X will get me there.

then again, always easier said than done... :wink:

Precisely, the "Why School X" should be integrated into the other essays. Use the optional essay, only if necessary, to address other aspects of your application that are not clear, such as a low GPA/GMAT, an extra-curricular activity that is hard to integrate into the essays but it is very important to you, or even your FINALIZED plans to visit the school in the coming weeks (I did this for CBS because it illustrates another example of me getting connected with the school).

The optional essay is always good to remove concerns from potential weak areas in your profile, or if you'd like to highlight reasons for periods of non-employment, etc. you could really do anything with this essay including highlighting other factors on why columbia is the right fit, or why applying late in the cycle, etc. , etc.

i just submitted my app on monday, and in my optional essay i highlighted my reasons for applying now, and how i would've applied ED if i had been under different circumstances. i basically weaved another story into this last essay that also showed why columbia is my first choice for both me and my family, and that i'm visiting the school for the host program in march. lastly, i made a note about some areas on one of my transcripts.

maybe i went overboard with it, but they will have no doubt columbia is my first choice.

yeah, i did write about 'Why Columbia' in Essay1, but I am thinking about writing why I applied so late, and inspite of the late app, CBS is still my first choice.

Evl, i too plan to visit CBS again next weekend, meet an adcom member if possible and write a more personal additional essay. With a Wharton ding, and both GSB and K interviews next week, I can focus solely on CBS starting next friday..

Columbia Open House is Thursday and Friday. I am escaping the power outage in Florida for some considerably colder weather in NYC. I'm pumped though! Will report back after this weekend is over.
